Devonte Holloman, the nation's number two safety according to Scout.com and one of the top performers at the weekend's UnderArmour/Scout.com Combine in Charlotte made a surprise announcement today and committed to Clemson. | |||

"I just committed to Clemson," said Devonte Holloman in a text message to Scout.com at 8:11 this evening. An excited, but noticeably tired Holloman said two hours later that it was a fun evening. "Ever since I put it out there, I've been on the phone with family and friends letting them know that I committed." The decision is not a drastic one for the five-star safety, as he has been thinking orange for the last few weeks. "I've been thinking about it, and asked my mom about it about a week ago. It was pretty much between Michigan and Clemson, and there were a couple differences like distance. Both coaching staffs coached together, so they learned together, and they are family guys. They are so much alike in a lot of ways. "The education seemed right for me at Clemson and knowing that my family would be able to come see me just helped in the end. That's a place I can see myself for four or five years even if I didn't get to play football." With a recruiting base firmly entrenched in the Carolinas, Holloman is already starting to get to know some of the current Clemson commitments and targets. "I talk to J.K. Jay all the time, him and Stephon Gilmore we talk all the time. I haven't been able to get ahold of Stephon, but I left him a message that I had good news." At the end of last month, Clemson received good news from the top safety in the country in Craig Loston from Houston, Texas. Holloman sees a lot of potential with the top two safeties in the country coming in together while looking at the depth chart. "I know that they are graduating two senior safeties and they are bringing in a safety in this class. I knew when they got [Loston], I was not saying that it's guaranteed that I would start or anything but I am hoping that I can go in there and work and earn some playing time first." If he plays anywhere close to the way he did last Saturday, he should do just that. Miller Safrit can be reached at millers@scout.com. |
