Gaffney Planning to Take His Time
San Diego (Calif.) Central Catholic running back Tyler Gaffney (6-1, 215) said he was up to five offers, and more schools have been showing interest in him. "I've gotten offered by Stanford, San Diego State, Utah, Notre Dame and UCLA," said Gaffney. "Notre Dame offered me about two months ago. Some other schools I've heard from are Wake Forest, Oregon, USC and Connecticut." With five offers and more showing interest, Gaffney said he still doesn't have a leader, and won't have one for a while. "I really don't have a leader because I want to set up some more unofficial visits before I do that," said Gaffney. "I've already been to Stanford, UCLA, San Diego State, Notre Dame and USC for their Junior Days, so I want to see some of these other schools." Gaffney did say, though, that the Pac-10 schools he's hearing from are recruiting him the hardest. "Stanford, USC, Oregon and UCLA are definitely recruiting me the hardest of all the schools I'm getting recruited by," said Gaffney. He also added Colorado and Washington have been by the school, both schools there to check him and teammate Everett Benyard out, amongst a host of schools that also included USC, UCLA and San Diego State. "There's been a lot of them coming by, it seems like every day, to say hi to the coaches and see me," said Gaffney. In no rush to decide, Gaffney does have an estimated timetable for his decision. "I want to decide right after my senior year," said Gaffney. "I want the season to be about our time as a team. Once our season is over, I'll see where I'm going. I'm open to going anywhere, but the West Coast is the West Coast, so I'd kind of like to stay out here." Gaffney also said he hopes to continue playing baseball in college. "I definitely want to go to a place where I can play both, so that's definitely a factor. This summer, I'll be playing for some scouts of major league baseball and hopefully do the Area Code games. I'll be busy with baseball," said Gaffney. And he has been so far, with Cathedral standing at 21-4 and playing this week for the league title and a high seeding in the CIF-San Diego Section playoffs. Gaffney is planning to attend the UnderArmour/Scout.com Combine on May 31st, but should Cathedral advance to the sectional finals, he'll be playing baseball instead. A big junior year saw Gaffney rush for 1,550 yards and 29 touchdowns in helping lead Cathedral to the 2007 CIF-San Diego Section D-III title. He also had 20 catches for 303 yards and five touchdowns. Gaffney earned First Team All-San Diego County. During his 2006 sophomore season, Gaffney ran for 1,544 yards and 23 touchdowns and caught 21 passes for 313 yards and five scores and was a First Team All-Eastern League pick. Academically, Gaffney has a 3.3 GPA and took the SAT earlier this month.
