What Matters and What Doesn't

Jackson Powell now favors Arizona, the only campus he's visited, slightly over Washington, Utah, Boise State and California. All of his favorites have offered, except the Broncos. "Boise State said they were very interested," Powell said. "They really want me to go to their camp and I think they'll offer me there." Powell plans on attending camps at Boise State, Arizona and California.

Jackson Powell, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound three-star defensive end from Newbury Park, Calif., finished his junior season with 65 tackles, 11 sacks and one interception. His team finished the year with an 11-2 record.

"I have great speed and agility," Powell said. "Those are my main strengths. I'm told I have good quickness and that I attack the ball well. I play with a lot of aggressiveness."

Powell says he'd like to improve his "hand movement," and "getting to the quarterback better."

He benches 250-pounds, squats 360 and has a 29-inch vertical jump.

Powell, ranked as the No. 61 defensive end in the country by Scout.com, now favors Arizona slightly over Washington, Utah, Boise State and California. All of his favorites have offered, except the Broncos.

"Boise State said they were very interested," he said. "They really want me to go to their camp and I think they'll offer me there."

He plans on attending camps at Boise State, Arizona and California. The only school he's already had a chance to actually visit is Arizona. "It's a really nice school," he said. "The facilities are great and the people seem really nice.

"Plus they seem to be getting better and better every year and I think it's a pretty stable program," Powell said. "They told me that I could really help make an impact on their team."

He also has offers from San Diego State, Nevada and Wyoming and says the Aztecs are recruiting him the hardest. "They send a lot of letters," he said.

The first school to offer Powell was Washington. "I like the area up there," Powell said. "I've heard Seattle is real nice and that there are a lot of hiking and trails and stuff there. I'm a big hiker, so I like that."

Growing up Powell said he followed USC because both his father (Marvin Powell) and brother (Marvin Powell, Jr) were Trojans. "They aren't recruiting me though," he said.

His sister went to Cal and Powell says he really likes Berkeley. "I love the Bay Area and San Francisco a lot," he said.

"I'm going to wait until the season before I make a decision," he said. "The three things that I'm looking for are coaches, football program and the campus. I'm not looking for a specific type of coach, but just coaches that can relate to their players and where they have good relationships with them.

"I don't care about getting away or the weather, but I'd like a nice open campus," he said.

Powell says he'd like to major in plant science or zoology. He reports a 3.0 core GPA and a 1500 SAT (three-part).
