One player who impressed us in Oakland last weekend at the UnderArmour/Scout.com Combine was Sunnyvale (Calif.) The King’s Academy defensive end Travis Johnson (6-2.5, 222).

Johnson has starred at the small school in the Bay Area, earning all-state underclass honors by GoldenStatePreps.com last fall. While the school hasn’t produced many D-I football players, Johnson is hoping to change that.

“Not a lot of people have been seen in the past,” said Johnson. “Last year in the middle of the season, I got some letters from some small schools and from a little bigger schools. The letters kept coming and I kept responding and seeing what I could get.”

Johnson said that those schools included Cal, Oregon State, Utah, Army, Oregon and Northern Arizona.

“Most like me as an outside linebacker, maybe defensive end for some,” said Johnson. “Right now, if I could play end, that would be good, because I know that really well. But I want to learn a little more at linebacker because I think I would do a little better there and I’m strong enough to be there and I think I can read the plays. So if I can learn that a little more, I’d probably say linebacker.”

Johnson is still waiting for his first offer, but the feedback has been positive.

“I’ve had a couple of coaches come to the school and talk and they say they want to see my senior film. That’s a big thing. I’ve talked to a bunch of coaches and they want to see that,” said Johnson.

And whoever offers, Johnson won’t be in a hurry to make a decision.

“I want to see what all my options are so I can see the playing field and what I have and see what would be the right choice,” said Johnson.

Johnson earned all-combine honors at the Scout Combine in Oakland and the previous week was named DL MVP at the Oregon Nike Camp. He was attending Cal’s camp earlier this week as well.

During his 2007 junior season Johnson recorded 139 tackles and 21 sacks, two fumble recoveries and blocked a field goal. Five times, Johnson had three sacks in a game and another game he had four sacks.

He was named 2007 Bay Football League Defensive MVP and First Team Defense by San Jose Mercury News and Palo Alto Daily News Academically, he has a 3.3 GPA and scored a 1590 on the SAT.
