Catching Up: Mike Tamburo
North Gwinnett (GA) made it to the state championship game last year at the highest level. They played a tough opponent in very harsh conditions and one of their best weapons was rendered somewhat ineffective. The weapon is back and he is ready to make another run. Mikey Tamburo has both the talent and the ability to lead that will get them there. The question is... has anybody taken notice? Scout.Com caught up with the talented signal-caller to find out the latest. "SMU saw me at their one-day camp and really liked me," Tamburo said. "But they are not in position to offer right now." Sometimes it appears to be a perfect fit but a school may already have that position taken care of. "Texas Tech has really shown interest but they already have a QB committed," he said. So what next for Tamburo? "I'll be going to some camps," he said. It looks like maybe Alabama and Vanderbilt, but I know I will be going to South Carolina." Of these schools, who has shown the most interest? South Carolina has shown the most interest and I think there is a good chance that they may offer," he said. "I know they need a QB." I am going to camp at South Carolina on the 18th and I know this is a great opportunity for me." it is clear that Tamburo is working toward that first big offer, but that is not to say that he is not happy with the offers he has. "I am happy with the offers I have and I am really excited about the fact that they run some form of a spread offense," he said. So, just who has offered? "Toledo, Tulsa, UL-Monroe, Ohio, Bowling Green and Air Force." What is really interesting is that fellow in-state signal-caller Brendon Cross has offers from the last three, as well. "Brendan and I have gotten pretty close so that's pretty neat." Where does Tamburo stand in regard to making a decision? "I'm not planning on making an early decision," he said. "If a particular offer jumps out, maybe; otherwise, we'll just see how it plays out." "I will say that if South Carolina offered, I would probably commit." Tamburo is a solid student who carries a 3.25 GPA, but he is taking a bit of a different approach when it comes to testing. "I am going to take both tests during the fall," he explained. "The reason I am waiting is because I am taking test prep classes so that I can really do well." Those are things that he must do to take care of himself but, like most good QBs, he is ready to focus on the team. "We have a pretty full passing league schedeule and are ready to compete." The Bulldogs of North Gwinnett do appear to have a full schedule and here is a glimpse: Byrnes (SC) 7/10-12 Lassiter (GA) 7/17-18 Hoover (AL) 7/24-26 It appears that Tamburo and Co. will be well-prepared but after all of this, he will be ready to get where he feels the most comfortable. "After all that we be ready to play some football." And that is exactly what Mike Tamburo can do. Burke Hayes is the Southeastern Regional Manager for Football Recruiting at Scout.
