Size Isn't Everything for Grafton

Lawrenceville, N.J., product Vail Grafton has been hitting the camp trail and while he hasn’t nailed down his first scholarship offer yet it sounds as though he could be pretty close with UNLV breathing down his neck. We caught up with the diminutive corner to see how things have been going for him lately.

Over a year ago Vail Grafton measured in at 5-foot-6.5, 158 pounds and while he may not have gotten much bigger, his 40-yard dash time has been improved drastically, recently timing a 4.41 at a camp. While height may be a big deal for some schools Grafton is just focusing on playing ball and showing that he can make up for a few inches with good technique and quickness.

“I worked out with the defensive backs coach (Jeff) Hafley at Pitt camp and I thought I played well enough to pick up an offer, but he said my height is a knock on me that is hard to get over,” Grafton said. “He said I had great feet and hips, but the size was an issue. They’re going to evaluate me and I did learn a lot from Coach Hafley, so even if they don’t offer I appreciate his time.”

“There were a lot of kids at Boston College when I camped there, so there weren’t a ton of reps to go around,” Grafton stated. “It was a good camp, but I just didn’t get a good feeling about it up there.”

Temple was definitely my best performance of the camps I’ve been to and I got to work out with both the offensive and defensive coaches,” Grafton explained. “I actually played better on offense which was surprising and they were very impressed and said they’d be calling me in a few weeks. I feel very good about the school, the staff and my opportunity to get a scholarship from Temple. I just got a great vibe there and really dug the coaches and their work ethic.”

UNLV is one school that is on Grafton in a big way right now. He and his father have been in contact with their head coach several times and both the defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator have said they loved his film. Grafton will try to make the trip out to the school very soon.
