How did the prep standout from Knoxville Tennessee enjoy his trip to Oxford?
"It was a good time, a really good visit," added Daniel Hood. "Me and my mother got down there Friday around 6:00 and left Saturday around 6:00. This was our first trip to Ole Miss but my brother is moving there in August to go to school. I'm sure we'll be coming back a lot more. His girlfriend is getting her doctorate clinical psychology and he is finishing up his undergraduate at Ole Miss."
"My mom liked it down there. I like it and I don't think it could have gone any better. They have great facilities down there and the coaches are incredibly great people. We had a blast."
This visit gave Hood the opportunity to know the coaching staff.
"The main thing I learned was about the previous jobs with their coaching staff. Coach (Kent) Austin (Ole Miss Offensive Coordinator) played and was a head coach in the Canadian League. He did great things as a player and as a coach. Coach Nutt came from Arkansas and was taking them to New Year's Day bowls on a consistent basis. I did not know that Ole Miss' facilities were that nice (laugh), and that they had that deep of a football tradition. They also have a nice academic plan laid out for the student athletes. I just think that the program is headed in the right direction."
What stood out about Ole Miss the most during the unofficial visit?
"It would have to be the coaching staff. Every coach was on the same page. It was all positive. We met with Coaches Nutt, Austin and every assistant coach they had on the staff. They were all great people. I was impressed. They are planning to put me in at TE, and they said I have a really good chance at some early playing time. They said I was the prototype TE they were looking for, big and strong. Coach Austin said I would fit into this program well. He wants me to take a good hard look at Ole Miss. Coach Nutt said I was exactly what he was looking for in a TE and he thinks I have a chance to continue playing after college. We just had a great time on their campus. I got to see pretty much everything from the Fed Ex academic center to even their best plate lunch restaurant in Ajax. That was some good grub. I just really liked Coaches Austin and Nutt and the way they coach. I just get a good vibe from them and the whole campus. Everyone is positive. I did not meet one guy who had anything negative to say about Ole Miss while I was talking to people on their campus."
Was the trip about what he was expecting, better or worse?
"It was probably better because I didn't expect the town to be as nice as it is and the campus is just incredible. My brother has been telling me all about it but it is different when you get to see it first hand."
Where does this put the Rebels?
"Really, really good (laugh). I had a tremendous time there and it has been one of my better visits."
Where had Daniel visited before Ole Miss?
"I've been to Virginia Tech and UCLA. Virginia Tech is real close to home. It's only like 2 hours form my house. They also have a great program. At UCLA, they had a beautiful campus and very prestigious academic program."
Where will Hood visit next?
"I go to the University of Florida's camp this weekend and we're stopping by Florida State on the way back for an unofficial visit."
What stands out with Florida and Florida State?
"Florida is just a great football program and they also have a great campus. I met Coach Trickett from Florida State and he seems like a great coach. Coach Bowden has been tremendous in my recruitment and has done great things with their program."
The 6'6 260lb TE will also visit South Carolina the weekend after he visits the Florida schools.
"Me and my mother are just going over there on an unofficial visit to check out the campus. Coach Spurrier is obviously a great coach and is building a great program. He is also from Johnson City TN) which is only 30 minutes from my home town."
Are there anymore colleges involved in Daniel's recruitment?
"Auburn and Georgia Tech are also still in it. Auburn has a beautiful campus and very prestigious football program. And with Georgia Tech, they also have a prestigious academic program. I have also met with their coaches and I get along with all of them really well. Also, they run the same type of offense that we run so it would be an easy transition for me."
Have all of these colleges offered Daniel?
"All of those schools have offered me but Florida. I have 17 total offers right now."
The Knoxville Catholic standout believes his work habits and physical prowess make him standout on the field.
"I'm really physical on both sides of the ball. But what gives me the edge is my initial burst off the edge. My technique and burst off the ball gives me an advantage going up against my defender."
Hood reports a 3.85 core GPA/27 ACT.
