Jones Brings Big Production to UVA
Perry Jones might not look the part at 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, but last year he played strong side linebacker and registered 141 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and intercepted five passes, one of which he returned for a touchdown. While his size didn't hold him back from playing linebacker at the high school level it will in college, which is why he'll be switching to the secondary for Virginia. "When it came down to decision time it was really between Navy, Virginia and Boston College and while I hadn't visited any of them yet officially, I had been to Virginia before for a game and knew that was it," Jones said. "I grew up a fan of Virginia and had always followed them, so the decision was really made easy there." "The number one reason I picked them was because I know they're the top ranked public university in America," Jones explained. "All of the schools I was seriously looking at were excellent academically because that's priority number one. I want to get out of college and have the type of degree that impresses and helps you get places in the real world." "I also really liked the coaching staff a lot. Coach (Bob) Pruett recruited me and when he first came in to talk to me he made a great impression. I went down to Virginia about a month ago and got to sit down with Head Coach Al Groh as well for about 45 minutes which was really nice. He's a great guy and talked about how he wants his players to be great people and great students." As for the position switch, it is definitely something the Chesapeake, Va., native has embraced. "They told me I'll be moved to strong safety or maybe even get a look at cornerback and I think I'll do really well there, especially safety," Jones added. "I played the strong side at linebacker in high school and am very physical in run support. I also have great speed which will help me back in the secondary and closing to the ball." Jones was named first-team All-District, All-Region and All-State as a junior.
