David Wang wasted absolutely no time making his collegiate decision this year as he accepted a scholarship offer from Virginia Tech the day he received it. Not much has changed for him since becoming a future Hokie, however he has been working hard to get ready for the position switch he’ll have to make when he gets to Blacksburg in the summer of 2009.
Stone Bridge High School offensive tackle
David Wang
was the first player to give a verbal pledge to
Virginia Tech
this season and the 6-foot-2, 300-pound lineman has been working hard to prepare for the position change he’ll be making in 2009 right now. He spoke to us about that process as well as his decision to commit to Virginia Tech so quickly recently.
“Virginia Tech was the first offer I got and I just committed immediately because that is where I wanted to go,” Wang stated. “They have a great program, I love the campus and the way it is set up and the coaching staff is full of great people.”
The Ashburn, Va., native talked a bit about his future coaches.
“My position coach (Charley) Wiles is a great coach and I really get along well with him already,” Wang added. “Coach Torrain Gray has been recruiting me since I was a sophomore and is a very nice guy. I have always felt like he really cared about me and he’s a laid back guy, but knows when to get down to business. I also like Coach
Frank Beamer
a lot because as soon as you meet him he treats you like you’re part of the family.”
Wang also talked about his future position change.
“I only played one game at defensive tackle last season, but I’m hoping to play some defense this year as a senior,” Wang offered. “I’ve been doing drills to work on my hands, feet and strength lately. It’s just another speed when you’re playing defense, so I need to improve my footwork and hand work. Once I get that stuff down I think I’ll be fine.”
Wang was named first-team All-District, All-Region and All-State at offensive tackle as a junior. He has a max bench press of 400 pounds and a max squat of 525 pounds. He is the little brother of
Ed Wang
who plays left tackle for the Hokies.
