Valdosta High School is one of the most tradition rich programs in the entire
country, and the University of Tennessee
made its way down I-75 to pick up a commitment
from an impressive offensive lineman Antonio Foster
Foster pledged to the Vols last week after entertaining offers from a host of
programs. Watching Foster play, it doesn't take long to see what so many
colleges saw in Valdosta's left tackle.
At 6-4 and 280 pounds, Foster is right on the edge of the height that most
college coaches are looking for in their offensive tackles. He has a tremendous
first step, and as can be expected from Valdosta's power running game, Foster is
a great drive blocker.
He does a good job of reaching the linebackers on the second level of his
blocks, and he uses his hands well once he's engaged with a defender. Foster's
conditioning is also very good as his fourth quarter effort level is equal to
that of the first.
Foster keeps his head on a swivel and never takes a play off. He plays
assignment football, and if there's no one in his space to block, he'll help
double a defender with a teammate. He's an instinctive blocker in that he has a
great feel for when the ball carrier has beaten the man that Foster is blocking,
and Foster will release his man and move to the next level to pick up a second
block. That particular quality is very rare amongst high school football players
and shows Foster's feel for the game.
It's not surprising based on Valdosta's style of play that Foster's run blocking
is further ahead of his pass blocking, but he shows more than enough athleticism
and effort to improve his technique to pick up outside speed rushers and remain
But one look at him pulling around the corner and slamming into a defender, and
it's not hard to picture him as a pulling guard on the Tennessee offensive line
Tennessee is getting a player that will give them a lot of options. Offensive
line coaches can never have enough big, strong, athletic, smart players, and
Foster fits the bill.
These clips were pulled from Valdosta's game against Lincoln (Fla.) last season.
This game is a very good indicator of everything that Foster is capable of.
