Beckles Patient, Has Leader
Los Angeles (Calif.) Verbum Dei defensive tackle Noel Beckles (6-2, 275) is still waiting for the first scholarship offer to come in, but he's not worried about it. "I'm not really worried at all, I know that my time will come," said Beckles. "I'm just trying to be patient and work hard and I know it will work out. A lot of the coaches I've talked to have said they just want to see a couple of games from my senior year and then I should be getting an offer." Beckles said that Oregon State, New Mexico, Syracuse, Washington and UCLA have been the schools he's been in contact with the most. "Those schools are also my top five schools," said Beckles. "My favorite school is UCLA. They're my leader and I'd have no problem committing to them. I'd probably wait just so I can take some visits, but they're my top choice." The Bruins have several factors in their favor for Beckles. He said: "My teammates are there (Justin Edison and Akeem Ayers, Beckles' teammates when he started as a sophomore), it's close to home and it's easy access, too, if my mom wanted to come see me or see my games. And then I also really like the coaching staff. Coach (Todd) Howard and Coach (DeWayne) Walker are the coaches recruiting me there. I talk to Akeem mostly and I'm always telling him to put in a good word for me." Right behind the Bruins are the Huskies, and Beckles will get a chance to see the Emerald City this coming weekend. "This will be my first trip to a Pac-10 school besides USC or UCLA," said Beckles. "I'm excited about it and looking forward to visiting Washington. I have a good feeling that they could be offering me. Coach Brian White is recruiting me for Washington." Beckles camped at USC and UCLA this spring, as well as the Nike Camp and the UnderArmour/Scout.com Combine in Los Angeles. Otherwise, he's been focusing on returning Verbum Dei to the CIF title game, which they won his sophomore season. "I've been playing some center, but I'm really just doing d-line. And that's what I'm playing in college," said Beckles. During his 2007 junior season, Beckles had 52 tackles, 13 for loss, five sacks and three fumble recoveries. Academically, Beckles has a 2.7 GPA and scored a 1250 on the SAT.
