Marsalis Teague
National Recruiting Editor
Posted Jul 30, 2008

"I grew up following Miami," Marsalis Teague said. "I just loved their aggressiveness, especially on defense. When I was watching them they had a star-studded team." Teague says the 'Canes are recruiting him for cornerback. "I like coach Randy Shannon and he seems like a real down-to-earth guy and real humble. He seems like a guy who'll talk with you about anything..."

Marsalis Teague, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound three-star athlete from Henry County High School in Paris, Tenn., played quarterback as a junior, but is being recruited to play cornerback or wide receiver by most colleges.

"I'm a great athlete," Teague said. "I'm quick and I'm elusive when I have the ball in my hands.

"On defense I'm real aggressive and smart," he said. "I feel comfortable playing any position…quarterback, cornerback and wide receiver. I'll do it all."

Teague finished his junior season with 1,616 yards passing for 17 touchdowns and 1,530 yards rushing for 16 touchdowns.

"I'm still working on improving my route running," he admitted. "And on defense I want to work on my man coverage and jamming. I need to improve my hips."

Teague, ranked as the No. 28 quarterback in the country by Scout.com, says he benches 265-pounds and has a 36-inch vertical jump.

Although he says he remains "very open," Teague still favors Miami slightly over Clemson, Michigan, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Georgia Tech. All of his favorites have offered as well as Ole Miss, Stanford, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest and Memphis.

"I grew up following Miami," he said. "I just loved their aggressiveness, especially on defense. When I was watching them they had a star-studded team."

He says the 'Canes are recruiting him for cornerback. "I like coach Randy Shannon and he seems like a real down-to-earth guy and real humble," he said. "He seems like a guy who'll talk with you about anything."

Teague says he's also impressed with how coach Shannon is recruiting. "They had a real good recruiting class last year and that's the key to improving," he said. "I think the team is getting better and down the road they will be back on top where they used to be."

Most of the schools in Teague's top six are recruiting him for cornerback, except for Michigan which he says are liking him as a signal caller. "I love their new style of offense they are gonna run under coach Rich Rodriguez," he said. "It's the same offense we run at my high school and they said I could play quarterback there.

"Coach Rodriguez says they need a guy like me to run his offense," he said. "But they are also looking at me for corner or receiver. I guess the defensive coordinator wants me for cornerback and the offensive coordinator wants me for quarterback. Either way they've got a spot for me."

Besides getting a chance at QB, Teague says it's the Wolverines tradition that stands out. "They've got great tradition at Michigan," he said. "It's some of the best in the country."

The Wolverines are the only program in Teague's favorites that he hasn't had a chance to visit yet. "I'll take my official visits during the season," he said. "I hope to start setting them up next month because I'd like to commit right after our season ends (November/December)."

Georgia Tech is another program which has mentioned the possibility of playing quarterback. "They are recruiting me for corner but haven't ruled out quarterback," he said. "I guess they run a pretty similar offense to ours as well."

Teague's teammate, running back Dominique Allen, has already committed to Tennessee and Teague admits that they have talked about playing together in college. "We've been playing together since Pop Warner," he said.

"We've never not played on the same team, so it would be really weird to see him in a different uniform from mine," he said. "When the whole recruiting thing first started we talked about going to the same college, but he was ready to commit and I wasn't. He still wants me to go to Tennessee, but he'll be happy for me if I don't. If it happens, it happens."

Teague also has a cousin, Chavez Scott, who plans to walk-on at Vanderbilt as a running back. The Commodores are just under two hours from Teague's house, but he admits that distance will not be a factor. "I just want to feel comfortable," he said. "As long as I feel at home it doesn't matter where I am. I could be in California and if I feel comfortable then the distance wouldn't matter."

One place that Teague admits already feels like home is Clemson. "It reminds me of my home town," he said. "It's a family environment. I liked getting to know some of the players. I talked with C.J. Spiller and a few other guys and they were all real cool.

"I also really like the weight room and stadium at Clemson," he said. "I just had a good time there overall."

The only camp that Teague attended was at Georgia.

"I want to play for coaches that will help develop my game and make me a better player," Teague said. "I really like coaches that know when to get serious, but still have fun.

"I also want a school with good tradition and that wins," he said. "I don't want to go to a team at the bottom. I want to at least have a chance to win."

Although Teague isn't sure what he plans to major in college, he knows what his goals are. "I want to make a lot of money," he said jokingly. "That'll be my major."

He reports a perfect 4.0 core GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and a 21 ACT, which he plans on retaking in the fall.
