"I just caught a 7 1/2 pound bass and then it
got even better; I caught an eight pounder just a couple of minutes ago,"
stated the excited Drew Allen. "Me and my uncle and father are up here doing
some fishing. I just wanted to get away from all of the recruiting stuff and relax."The
6' 5 1/2" QB expands on the recent Oklahoma offer.
"I called Coach
Heupel Thursday. We had been talking a couple of times in the previous weeks.
He told me to call him Thursday and I did. He told me that they wanted me to be
a Sooner and that I had a scholarship. That is how the conversation started."
And
Drew replied back?
"I said I really appreciated it. It is a great honor
to get an offer from a prestigious program like Oklahoma. This is great, and I
could not thank him enough."
A visit to Oklahoma could follow.
"We
talked about maybe coming up there and seeing Coach Stoops in the immediate future.
I am trying to sort it out. I might or might not go, but I still want to make
a final decision before school starts."
The San Antonio native did
have a chance to visit the Oklahoma campus when he attended their football camp
in June, but he did not get tour much.
"I went to their camp, but I
saw a limited amount of things around there. I saw their stadium, trophy room,
and their practice field. But I have not been in the stadium or anything like
that."
The picture started to become clearer for Drew in recent weeks
after his Ole Miss visit, as he was leaning to the Rebels pretty solidify after
the trip. Has the Oklahoma offer muddied the water?
"Not necessarily.
It is more along the lines that with an offer from Oklahoma, I can not overlook
a great program like Oklahoma. They are starting the season off at #3 in the nation.
They are not a program to just take lightly. That is for sure."
Ole
Miss' offensive coordinator, Kent Austin, was in contact with Drew as soon as
he learned that his key target had received an offer from the Sooners.
"He
emailed me, and I called him back. It really was not along the lines of him saying
anything to me; I just told him that I got an offer Oklahoma, but that nothing
had changed between me and Ole Miss. But at the same time, it is exciting to get
such a prestigious offer. I have to look into it, but Ole Miss is still at the
top for me, with out a doubt. It does not change anything; it just brings Oklahoma
back into the picture."
Who else is still in the picture?
"Oklahoma State, Purdue, and Vandy. Wake Forest just committed a QB so they are now off
of the list."
