Florida WR hoping to make an impact
"Things are looking good out there right now," D.J. Nelson said. "Even though I wasn't playing, I know we had a few upsets the last few years and hopefully we can put together a strong season and make a run in the playoffs." Nelson, 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, talked about some of the things he looks to accomplish as a player this fall. "I just wanna get as many catches, as many yards, touchdowns, all that as I can," he said. "And have the least amount of drops as possible." Nelson's name isn't on the recruiting radar just yet. That's because he just started playing football in the spring. "I actually went out for football my freshman year but I was bored," he said. "Then Jonathan and other people kept telling me I should come out so I came out in the spring. I started out pretty bad but then it started coming to me. Football's easy to me and I really like it now and that's the difference from before." We first saw Nelson at a passing tournament over the summer, where he was using an excellent combination of size and speed to come up with a lot of big plays. He's hoping it'll translate into a big year so college coaches take notice. "Nobody's really recruiting me yet," he said. "I know I gotta show them something before they do and that's what I plan on doing. I've talked to UCF and LSU but that's about it. I like Georgia. I have family up there and think that would be a nice place to play. I liked Syracuse when I was younger but that's too far away from home." In case football doesn't work out for the talented receiver, basketball is always an option. "I've been playing basketball and I actually have an offer from Stetson in case I go that route," he said. "It'll depend on who offers me in each sport. It might be basketball, it might be football. I'll choose one and take it from there." Stay tuned to Scout.com, as we'll continue keeping you posted on the progress of this talented first year player.
