Football Commitments:* Standout wide receiver Tristen Ross of Shreveport (La.) Evangel Christian, has recommitted to Oklahoma after taking official visits to Tennessee and Texas. The 6-0, 195 pound Ross, who first committed to Oklahoma back in June only to decommit in August, took trips to Texas (9/21), Oklahoma (Nov. 1) and Tennessee (Nov. 9).Ross was one of the top wideouts at the Nike Camp in Texas, where he ran a 4.52 in the 40, a 4.24 in the shuttle and posted a 35-inch vertical jump. He caught 34 passes for 502 yards as a junior and had 46 catches for over 600 yards and six scores through Evangel's first 11 games this fall.* South Carolina has a big commitment from wide receiver Derrick Harper of Montclair (N.J.), over Pittsburgh, Maryland and Boston College. The 6-2, 180 pounder, who caught 35 balls for over 800 yards and eight TDs as a junior, also had offers from Penn State, Florida, Michigan, Iowa, Notre Dame and others. He clocked a 4.62 in the 40 and a 4.02 shuttle at the Nike Camp in Pennsylvania, where he showed terrific hands and an excellent burst.* Louisville gained a verbal from defensive back Delton Ashburn of Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy, over offers from Syracuse, Bowling Green and others. The 5-11, 175 pound Ashburn clocked a 4.47 in the 40 at the Nike Camp in North Carolina.* One of the top cornerbacks in California, Lorenzo Sims of Fresno Edison, committed to Colorado this weekend over offers from USC, LSU, Nebraska and others. The 5-10, 175 pounder was one of the top cover DBs at the Nike Camp in Los Angeles, where he ran a 4.62 in the 40 and posted a 31-inch vertical jump.* 5-9, 170 pound wide receiver Emmanuel Byers out of High Point (N.C.) Ragsdale, committed to Virginia this weekend on an unofficial visit to watch the Virginia-Maryland game. Byers, who clocked a 4.50 40, a 4.32 shuttle, benched 17 reps and posted a 32-inch vertical jump at the Nike Camp in North Carolina, chose the Cavaliers over offers from Tennessee, Wake Forest, Georgia, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State and others. He had over 700 yards receiving, seven interceptions, and returned four kickoffs for TDs as a junior. * The Washington Huskies have received commitments from two offensive linemen, 6-3, 275 pound Juan Garcia out of Yakima (Wash.) Eisenhower and 6-7, 285 pound Erik Berglund of Beaverton (Ore.). * Miami has its sixth verbal from punter Brian Monroe of Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.). The 6-2, 180 pounder, who was a Class 5A All-State selection as a junior, chose the Canes over interest from Florida State, Ohio State and Boston College. * Northwestern has received a verbal from big 6-5, 275 pound offensive lineman Austin Matthews of Orange Park (Fla.), over Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.* The Central Florida Knights pledged 5-11, 170 pound defensive back Trae Gomes of Sarasota (Fla.) Riverview. * 6-4, 215 pound inebacker Eugene Bright of Bryn (Pa.), has chosen Purdue over Minnesota and UConn. * The Toledo Rockets have a commitment from 6-5, 280 pound offensive lineman Justin Tharp out of Trafalgar (Ind.) Indian Creek.Football Recruiting News:* Hargrave Military (Va.)/Burlington (N.C.) defensive back Michael Hinton completed a stellar senior season with 75 tackles and seven interceptions, three of which he returned for scores. Hinton has setup trips to his two favorites, Virginia Tech (Dec. 14th) and NC State (Jan. 25th). The 6-2, 190 pounder also plans on visiting Florida and Tennessee and says he won't make a decision until after his last visit.* Hot 100 defensive lineman Clifton Dickson out of Miami (Fla.) Northwestern has set all five of his official visits. The 6-4, 285 pounder will trip to NC State (Dec. 6th), Rutgers (Dec. 13th), Maryland (Jan. 10th), Miami (Jan. 17th) and Florida State (Jan. 24th). Dickson has the weekend of January 4th open as he will travel to California to play in CaliFlorida Bowl IV.* Winter Park (Fla.) quarterback Steven Moffett 's senior season came to an end this week as the Wildcats lost in the second round of the State 6A playoffs to Jacksonville (Fla.) Edward White. The 6-3, 190 pound quarterback finished the year 98 of 160 passing for 1,522 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also ran for 680 yards and eight scores in 12 games. "Central Florida is still my leader but I'm going to take all four of my visits before I decide on anything," Moffett told Student Sports. "I also have to change around two of my trips because I had Georgia scheduled for Dec. 13th and that's the same weekend as the Central Florida All-Star game and January 4th I'm coming out for the CaliFlorida Bowl so I'll have to change my visit to UCF as well." Moffett said he'd likely push the Georgia visit back to Dec. 20th.Basketball Commitments:* 6-7, 190 pound Class of 2004 forward Dion Dowell of Texas City (Texas), has committed to Texas Longhorns. * The California Golden Bears have two Class of 2004 commitments from lanky 6-10, 180 pound forward David Ellis of Sacramento (Calif.) Capital Christian, and 6-10, 225 pound center Sam Rayburn of Portland (Ore.) Sunset.
