Glenville High has its usual collection of big names this year, but on Monday, it was one of their lesser known players who stole the show.
Senior wide receiver Mike Edwards had three receptions and he made them all count as they totaled 125 yards and two touchdowns. His explosiveness on offense lead the way as the Tarblooders defeated Thomas Jefferson 34-13 at Wheeling Island Stadium (Wheeling, WV).
While Edwards had the big plays it was actually tailback Ethan Cargill who got the ball rolling, punching in a 2-yard touchdown on the team’s first series. The Jaguars answered right away when Tyler Wehner found Dan Virgin for a 16 yard score, but a missed extra point left Glenville in the lead at 7-6.
That’s when Edwards took over and scored his two touchdowns in a row to put them up 21-6 at halftime. Ethan Baldridge would cut the lead for the Jaguars when he put in a 3-yard touchdown, but Glenville would add two successive touchdowns, the first by Cargill and the second by Robert Walton to put the game away.
Ohio State commitment Jonathan Newsome had three sacks to lead the Tarblooders. Glenville is now 2-0 on the season while Thomas Jefferson drops to 0-1.
