SoCal Sleeper Ready For Big Season

Gregory Smith

After an 11-sack junior season where he helped his school to a CIF-SS title, Perris (Calif.) Citrus Hill defensive end Gregory Smith is back for a big senior year...

Perris (Calif.) Citrus Hill is a relatively new school, but they've already had some immediate success.

Last fall, led by linebacker Jamie Irving, the Hawks won the CIF-SS title.

This year, qyarterback Caleb Herring will lead the offense, while defensive end Gregory Smith will pace the D.

Smith, 6-3, 240, is also getting some recruiting attention.

"It's going pretty good so far," said Smith. "Jamie helped me a lot."

Irving is now at UTEP and the Miners are one of the schools interested in Smith.

"I have interest from Nevada, UTEP, Oregon State, San Diego State, Colorado and Fresno State," said Smith.

Smith knows a good start to his senior season will help land him an offer.

The Hawks open with Lake Elsinore (Calif.) Lakeside this weekend.

Last fall, Smith had 11 sacks to help lead Citrus Hill to the CIF-SS title in 2007.
