Jackson Powell, the 6-foot-5, 220-pound three-star defensive end from Newbury Park, Calif., is moving towards a decision.
"I'm going to make my decision in October," Powell said. "I wanted to do it toward the middle of the season and be committed before the season ends."
The only official visit he has set up so far is to Arizona for the Washington game on Oct. 4, although he says he's in the middle of setting up a trip with the Huskies as well.
Powell still favors the Wildcats slightly over Washington and those two lead solidly over No. 25 Fresno State and California. All have offered, except for the Bulldogs. Although he lists four schools, he says it's basically a two-team race between Arizona and Washington.
The school that is recruiting Powell the hardest is Washington. "They definitely send the most mail," he said. "Plus I've been talking to (linebacker) coach Chris Tormey and he's real cool. He tells me about the school and the program.
"He said that if I went there I could probably play early my freshman year and not get redshirted," Powell said.
So what does Powell think of the Huskies early struggles. "They are still a young team," he said. "But I see them being pretty good. They've got great coaches and good players and there's no reason for them not to be successful."
Powell's top choice, Arizona, is also a team he considers up-and-coming.
"I think they are doing pretty good so far," he said of the Wildcats. "They are young and have a lot to work on, but they've improved a lot since the spring and seem to keep getting better."
He says that Arizona's opening game against Idaho was an eye opener. "That 70-0 start was awesome," he said. "That's unheard of.
"Plus it's really one of the only schools (besides Cal) that I've visited before," Powell said. "I've gotten to know the coaches and the players and I really liked the campus and everything. The people there are just so laid back and the coaches have a great sense of humor.
"I really like (head) coach Mike Stoops," he said. "He's a nice guy and I like how he knows what he wants to do with the program. He works hard and I like his attitude. He's determined to bring them up."
"I've also talked to (head) coach Pat Hill (from Fresno State) and he said that they'll have an offer for me if that's where I wanted to go," Powell said. "They just want to see how interested I am in them.
"I like Fresno State but I've never been there," he said. "But it's a good football school. They actually have a pretty good football history."
He also has offers from Oregon, Nevada, Utah, UNLV, Wyoming and San Diego State.
Newbury Park High School opened their season with a victory and Powell had two tackles and one sack in his first game as a senior.
Powell is ranked as the No. 63 defensive end in the country by Scout.com.
He reports a 3.0 core GPA and a 1500 SAT.
