Lamar Scruggs, the 6-foot-3, 212-pound three-star wide receiver from Duncan Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach, Fla., says he has finally narrowed his choices down to eight from amongst over 50 claimed scholarship offers.
Scruggs, Scout.com's No. 52 wide receiver, favors South Carolina, No. 22 Illinois, Tennessee, No. 12 South Florida, No. 4 Florida, No. 21 West Virginia, No. 23 Clemson and No. 6 LSU. All of his favorites have offered.
"I've been getting a lot of love from all these schools," said Scruggs, who continues to deny a leader. "It's hard to narrow it down. All the coaches call me and pretty much say the same thing. I don't think anybody is doing more than anyone else."
He hasn't scheduled any official visits yet, but says he wants to take all five. "I'll set most of them up after the season," he said. "I'm seeing if I could take a trip during our bye week but don't have anything yet."
With offers from schools nationwide, Scruggs says that distance will not be a factor. "I want to make sure I fit in and like the atmosphere," he said. "That's why I want to take my visits. I also want to find a program where I can go in and really make an impact."
He admits that he's looking for a passing-oriented offense and where he'll be able to get the ball in his hands.
"That's what I like about South Carolina," Scruggs stated. "They distribute the ball well and get all the receivers involved.
"I also really like (wide receiver) coach Steve Spurrier, Jr," he said. "He's really down-to-earth and is a guy that I can relate to."
Another team whose offense fits Scruggs is Illinois. "I don't know a lot about them," he said. "I know the offense is good and they seem to like airing it out too. I just want to go and see what they are like."
The only school from among his favorites that he's already visited is Florida. Scruggs attended the Florida/Miami contest on Sept. 6. "That was a pretty good game," he said. "The atmosphere there was awesome and very pumped up.
"I love the whole college football atmosphere," Scruggs said. "I also love the Florida offense and how they are just a great team. What else can you say about Florida? They're great."
Although Scruggs grew up following the Gators, there's another Florida team that is creeping up on his list - South Florida. "They run a good pro-style offense and they really get the receivers involved," he said.
"South Florida is still coming up," he said. "They are young but work hard and compete well. They are very talented and I don't see why they can't be a top five team."
So while Scruggs predicts that South Florida will be a top five team, he also questions if the defending national champions LSU will repeat. "I'm not sure they'll do it," he said. "They got some issues at quarterback, so they might need some time to get things back and before they can be on top again."
Another team that Scruggs believes will be back on top again is Tennessee. "I think they'll bring it together," he said. "They need a little work and need to polish things up but they are a good team, so I expect them to pick it up.
"I think the Florida/Tennessee game will be a good one," Scruggs said. "I hope it's a good game and both teams play well."
Duncan Fletcher High School is 2-0 and Scruggs has 10 receptions for 250 yards and three touchdowns.
He reports a 3.1 core GPA and a 980 SAT and 15 ACT. Scruggs plans on retaking both tests.
