Watkins Has First Offer
Hinsdale Central offensive lineman Collin Watkins recently picked up his first athletic scholarship. The type of scholarship must be specified with Watkins, because he is capable of earning scholarships for his 4.4 grade point average. However, this one was for his performance on the gridiron. "As of right now, I just have an offer from the Air Force Academy," Watkins reported, "Really, it was kind of out of the blue for me, but it was great. They sent me a questionnaire, and I sent it out and sent some tape along with it. A couple weeks later, I got a call from them and they said they'd like to offer me." The 6'3, 255-lb Watkins could play guard or center in college, but says most schools see him as a guard. Air Force may be his only current offer, but there are several schools interested "As of right now, I'm talking to Navy, Illinois State, Drake, Butler also and then some schools that asked me to send some film are Central Michigan, Michigan State, Miami Ohio and Northern Illinois." With Navy and Air Force as two potential schools for Watkins, he has had to think about whether or not a service academy would be a good fit for him. "It really hadn't been [a consideration] in the past," he explained, "I'm learning a lot more about it. There are a lot of benefits to it, like the incredible job opportunities you can get after you serve." So far this season, Watkins has only visited Illinois State, for an unofficial visit. He says once the season ends, he will have more time to take trips and become more familiar with the schools who are interested in him. That delay could also give time for more offers to make their way to his mailbox. "I think my decision will be later. A lot of schools wanted to see how my senior year went," he said, "and I wanted to go out and see schools, but I haven't seen a lot of them."
