Oxnard (Calif.) running back Sam McCowan (5-8, 170) is one third of the Yellowjackets three-headed offensive machine.
Teaming with quarterback Dasmen Stewart, who’s committed to San Jose State, and receiver Jamal Smith, who’s verballed to Utah, McCowan has been a big part of the Jackets’ 9-0 season.
The running back has a pair of offers, and several more schools are showing interest in him.
“Army and San Jose State both offered me as a running back,” said McCowan. “I’m also hearing from Nevada, San Diego State, Fresno State, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, UC Davis and New Mexico.”
McCowan’s versatility helps, as he could play on either side of the ball.
“I really don’t have a preference,” said McCowan. “I can play either corner or running back. I guess I’d say DB, but it really doesn’t matter to me.”
McCowan and the Jackets’ are poised for a big run in the CIF-SS Northern Division playoffs, so he’s putting off his visits for a few more weeks.
“I’m planning to start taking my trips in December after the season is done,” said McCowan.
Currently, four schools lead for McCowan, a pair from the Mountain West and a WAC duo.
“My top four is San Jose State, Colorado State, Nevada and San Diego State,” said McCowan. “One of the main reasons I’m looking at San Jose State is because Dasmen is committed there. That teamwork and chemistry we have is pretty good.”
McCowan said that Fresno State has also been making a recent push.
But for now, his biggest focus is on his high school team, as they’re set for a long run.
“The past couple of years, I don’t think we were serious about it, but I think this year, we’re making a big difference and we want to get past the first round and get to the championship game,” said McCowan.
McCowan has been doing his part for the Jackets, rushing for 1,134 yards and 21 touchdowns, catching a touchdown pass and returning a kick for a score. Defensively, he has 20 tackles and an interception.
Academically, he has a 3.0 and will take the SAT in December.
