Livonia Clarenceville assistant coach Edward Watkins has been right there through Jeremy Gainer
's football career. Not only is Watkins his coach, but he is also his uncle and has been guiding Jeremy through the recruiting process. Hence, he was one of the first people we talked to when the question of Gainer's commitment came up.
"Basically, he has decided to take his remaining official visits," Watkins reported, "He did not de-commit he just changed it to a soft verbal. He has opened things up and is going to be looking around, looking inside the Big Ten and other conferences. Basically, the Indiana coaches and I talked and he talked to them and the approach is still that they want him to remain committed, which he is doing, but they understand he is looking around. When you do that, there is a chance when you look around that you could change your mind and they are aware of that. It's a big decision for these young guys and he's being smart about it. If he decides to stay with the commitment and go to IU, he wants to know that he's 100%."
Gainer has already begun the process of checking around and will continue to over the next few weeks. This weekend, he will head to Minnesota for an official visit and has been told that an official offer will be waiting for him when he gets there. Last weekend, he went to Penn State for an unofficial, where he was impressed with the Nittany Lions.
"He liked what he saw," Watkins reported, "they're talking to him as well now. Who knows what will happen with that, they have not extended an offer yet, we're just waiting to see and look at their level of interest and go from there.
Earlier in the year, Gainer took an official visit to Kansas State, but Watkins says the coaching situation has taken the Wildcats off his list. With official visits to Minnesota and KSU already under his belt and one planned for Indiana the first week of December, Gainer is carefully deciding where his final two official visits will be. Two schools he is also considering are the two Big Ten schools right in his backyard.
"We've been talking to Michigan State and Michigan's been inviting him to games, but we don't know what that situation is," Watkins said, "Michigan State has always been very interested. This summer, he had his hamstring and they told him he had inside track to an offer. With his injury situation, he decided under our guidance as well, to not to push his injury have a healthy season. That went well because we went from 1-8 to 9-2 and he had a great season. Unfortunately with that, he didn't get that offer."
Watkins said that early December official visit to Indiana along with any offers which may come will be crucial in the process. He also says the flood of interest has only come after Jeremy decided to re-open his recruitment.
"I want to say too that the coaches in the conference have been pretty respectful. I don't know if there is some unwritten agreement, but while they've been in contact, they haven't pressed him until he decided to open things up. From there of course, a lot of them started calling."
