William Campbell the 6-foot-5, 315-pound five-star defensive tackle from Cass Tech High School in Detroit, Mi., says he now has over 50 scholarship offers and continues to deny a leader from among his four favorites.
Campbell, ranked as the No. 4 defensive tackle in the country by Scout.com, said his leaders are still Alabama, LSU, Michigan and Miami. This is the order in which he mentioned the schools.
"I'd really like to get some early playing time," Campbell said. "Also I want to go where I'd have a chance to get a ring."
He's already taken official visits to Alabama on Nov. 15 and LSU on Nov. 21.
"Alabama was a lot of fun," Campbell said. "I liked being there. I expected Tuscaloosa to be a little town, but it wasn't. It was fun, with a lot to do."
Campbell says the thing that stood out the most about Alabama was the fans. "The fans are amazing," he said. "They don't have any pro teams, so everyone there loves them."
His player host was running back Mark Ingram. "He's a cool guy," Campbell said. "We had fun hanging out."
Campbell's looking forward to the SEC championship game. "Alabama and Florida should be a great game," he said. "I don't know who will win, but it will be fun to watch."
The week after visiting Tuscaloosa, Campbell headed back south to Baton Rouge to visit LSU. "I really like it out there," he said. "We spent a lot of time outside of the campus and touring around the city and that was fun.
"I liked getting off the campus and checking things out," he said. "We went to the mall and hung out. There's a lot to do there."
Campbell admits he was surprised at the Tigers somewhat disappointing season. "They struggled a bit this year," he said. "They lost a few players and it may take a year or two to get back on top, but I'm sure they will."
His player host at LSU was former teammate (offensive lineman) Joseph Barksdale. "It was cool seeing Joe again," he said. "But he was busy preparing for a test so I got to hang out with a bunch of other guys too."
Next up for Campbell is a trip to local Michigan on Dec. 6. "They send me the most mail," he said. "It's close to home and I love their tradition. It's only like 35 minutes away which is nice, but it's not a big deal.
"I like coach Rich Rodriguez," he said. "He's an intense coach and he shows his players a lot of love. I think he'll do great there."
Campbell will take his final visit to Miami on Dec. 12. "They have a lot of tradition too," he said. "I really like how they send a lot of guys into the league. I'm eager to go down there and check them out. I really like being in the south."
So what is it about the south that appeals to Campbell the most? "It's different," he said. "I think the fans are more into college football in the south. They really follow their teams and I think it's because there aren't as many pro teams."
Cass Tech High School finished the season with a 8-3 record and Campbell had 55 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, nine sacks, two fumbles caused, two fumbles recovered and one touchdown off a fumble.
He benches 425. "I'm really strong," he said. "I also have great balance and can get rid of double teams. I'm a strong player and destroy everything in the backfield."
He says he'd still like to improve his speed and quickness and use his hands better.
Campbell plans to announce his decision at the Army All-America game in San Antonio.
He says he wants to major in communications and reports a 3.2 core GPA and is awaiting his ACT results.
