Juco CB taking in SEC visit

The 5' 11, 185 pound defensive back was buzzed over the intercom to the principles office, little did the MS Gulf Coast CC star know it was about football and not school.

"Ole Miss came by my school last week, and they called me to the office," added Ira Smith. "I did not know what was going on. It is not normally a good thing to get called to the office, so I was in shock when I found out that Ole Miss had dropped by to see me."

This was the first encounter between the Rebels and Ira.

"I had never heard from them before. That is why I was so shocked. My teammate, CB Demond Washington, he is going over there so I was hoping they would start recruiting me. I sent them a highlight tape, and they told me that they just got my film and they liked it. Coach Dickerson took it over to Coach Nutt and he liked it too, so they want to bring me up there this weekend with Demond for a visit."

The former Long Beach running back does not know a whole lot about Ole Miss but he does know one thing.

"They have coach Nutt now, and they are going to a New Year's Day bowl the first year he was there. They have turned it around up there."

Who else is involved?

"I have offers from UAB, North Texas, ULM, Louisville, and Ohio."

Has Smith taken any prior official visits?

"I went over to North Texas and La Tech, but our season just ended last weekend, and I graduate next week, so I did not have time to take all of my visits."

Which schools are still under consideration?

"North Texas presents a good situation for me. They need some immediate help at CB. La Tech is the same; they need some help. I want to look at the depth chart at Ole Miss this weekend and see how they do things. How the coaches and players get a long. It is mainly those three schools right now."

Ira rushed for over 1, 600 yards as a senior at Long Beach and was named the Harrison County Player of the Year for his play. But the big time D1 colleges did not come calling so he inked with MS Gulf Coast CC.

"I played strong safety last year. I played behind Andre Watson (USM signee), but I did get in on the nickel and dime plays. Then in the offseason, they moved me over to cornerback. I had to learn how to play corner, but I got better as the season went along. I finished the season with 60 tackles, 2, int's, and 14 pass breakups."
