There is a lot news going on as the first big official visit weekend of the season has come and gone…
Who Will Land Newsome
After finishing up his senior football season at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military Academy, Kevin Newsome has transferred to Portsmouth (Va.) Churchland to finish up the year. On Tuesday, the four-star quarterback will make his college decision at a press conference. He will choose between Penn State, Virginia Tech and Boston College and we will break down all three choices and make our prediction. Boston College: The Eagles seem pretty set at quarterback for the future as red shirt freshman Dominique Davis got playing time and even started the ACC Championship game. The Eagles also have Atlanta (Ga.) native Justin Tuggle waiting in the wings. There also remains the possibility that Hampton (Va.) prospect Tajh Boyd could choose the Eagles. Boyd is more of your classic drop back passer and would likely be a better fit in the Eagles offense then the dual-threat quarterback Newsome. Predicted Order Of Finish: Third Virginia Tech: The Hokies offense does fit the skill set of Newsome. The team is centered on sophomore quarterback Tyrod Taylor. It would be a safe bet to say he will be the Hokies starter for the next two seasons. There is not a lot of talent behind Taylor in the foreseeable future, so the Hokies could obviously use the services of Newsome. If the Hokies lose out on the Newsome sweepstakes you will likely see them focus their efforts on class of 2010 phenom Phillip Sims from Chesapeake (Va.) Oscar Smith. Predicted Order Of Finish: Second Penn State: While I'm sure the Nittany Nation was not thrilled with the news of Pat Devlin transferring from the program, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for those wanting Newsome to be the next quarterback to grace the grass at Beaver Stadium. Incumbent starter Daryl Clark will have one more season of eligibility after this one. Devlin was the back-up and he is gone, so that leaves Paul Cianciolo who is also out of eligibility after this season. Derrick Williams will likey be the third option for the Nittany Lions in the Rose Bowl. Penn State does have a walk-on freshman Matt McGloin, but the choice after Cianciolo would likely be former high school quarterback turned wide receiver Brett Brackett in an emergency situation. Brackett will be counted upon as a wide receiver next year, so he will not be a permanent fix. So it would seem that the Nittany Lions are the team with the most pressing need to fill the quarterback position. Newsome could effectively be the No. 2 guy as a true freshman and with the chances that Clark takes running the Penn State HD Spread style offense he would only be a play away from being the guy. He could learn for a season and then take over the reins in year two. Mechanically, Clark is better. Athletically you're looking at another potential Michael Robinson type of signal caller in Newsome. Curtis Drake from Philadelphia (Pa.) West catholic is an incoming recruit, but his future will likely be at wide receiver. Predicted Order Of Finish: First Parting Shots: It is amazing when you think about college football recruiting that one player and one position can cause so much drama. Think about it. Kevin Newsome is the top player on the Penn State board at quarterback. Newsome commits to Michigan, then he decommitted from Michigan. Penn State fans figured when he committed that obviously meant they stood a better chance of landing Tate Forcier. Then Newsome changes his mind after Forcier and Shavodrick Beaver choose Michigan. Tajh Boyd is committed to West Virginia, yet another Penn State target off the board. Boyd then decommits from West Virginia and is back on the Penn State radar, but just for a brief second as he commits to Tennessee. Now, the focus is just on Newsome. But wait, Boyd basically gets shown the door by new Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin. Boyd is back on the board with Newsome. Boyd takes an official to Ohio State, it is not looking good for the Nittany Lions or is it? Fans are trying to figure out who is Plan B? Newsome takes an official to Penn State. Newsome then sets an announcement date. After all of that Penn State may be able to rest easy as it looks like they could land the guy they wanted all along. That is why fans should wait until signing day, once the faxes come in and then you will know for sure who is going where. It sure could've save a lot of folks a lot of stress.
