It does not take long to notice the 6' 2", 205 pound receiver
out of Oak Grove (MS) while playing on the field. He already has a "college
upperclassman body" at the tender age of 17, but Robert Johnson feels like
he brings a couple more attributes to the table.
|
"I feel like I have
good field vision," added Robert Johnson. "I can read the holes well,
and I do a good job of focusing on the ball until it is in my hands. I have also
spent a lot of time growing up in the film room so I do well at recognizing the
defenses."
Robert helped Oak Grove to a 5A Semifinal appearance for
the second straight season.
"The season went pretty good, except
getting beat by Meridian. We are getting closer and closer. I am looking forward
to coming back for my senior season and getting a championship banner hung up
over here. That is all that is on our mind. Our junior class has been a big part
of this team, and we have a lot of guys coming back next year who can do some
things with the ball in their hands. It is going to be exciting."
The
Warriors will be loaded with skilled players next season as they bring back the
state's most talented core of WR's in Robert Johnson, Jay Hughes, and Steve McNair
Jr, while returning a veteran QB in James McMahon.
"We really feel
like we have a chance to win it all next year. We believe it is our time to put
us on the map. It is just a feeling that we have around here. I can't wait to
get started again. It is going to be a long off-season just waiting for it to
get cranked back up again."
Not many high school teams have three
big time SEC caliber WR's on their team. They only problem the Warriors have had
is trying to utilize all of their playmakers.
"It really has not been
hard for us to share the ball. We all kind of move around. I play some WR, but
I played a lot of tailback too when Jay (Hughes) got hurt. Jay plays running back
(171 carries for 880 yards and 17 TD's), receiver (10 receptions for 189 yards),
and he plays some quarterback too. And Steve, he is always going to get his catches
(58 catches for 962 yards and 8 Td's). It has been a great experience. We still
block for each other, and we do not make it a competitive thing. We really look
out for the team."
It worked out well for Robert as he had 48 catches
for 632 yards and 9 Td's, while carrying the ball 31 times for 276 yards and 4
Td'sThis was good enough to earn 1st Team All-Area status.
Now his attention
turns to the Army All-American combine in January.
"I leave to San
Antonio in a few days. I have been going to the field during the Christmas break
and running some routes and getting loose. We are going to do a lot of the same
things I did at Ole Miss last summer. It is going to be your typical combine stuff."
Robert
received his first offer from Ole Miss recently.
"My coach said he
got word last week , but I have not gotten it in the mail yet. Coach told me that
it is coming soon."
Johnson got a chance to work out in front of the
Ole Miss staff for the 3 Day Camp last summer.
"I really like Coach
Nutt a lot. Ever since I went up there this summer, I have liked that program
a lot. I can see myself in the Red and Blue uniform. I just connected well with
their staff, and I like their indoor practice facility. The school is good too.
All around, I just like Ole Miss."
The hometown school, Southern Mississippi,
is also a player.
"I know everything there is to know about them.
I grew up watching them play. My mom and dad graduated from Southern. I got to
go to every one of their home games. They wear the black and gold like we do.
I have connected well with their staff too, especially their head coach. I can
see myself going to USM. It is close to home, and if it came down to it, I would
play for them."
It is still early in the recruiting process but another
SEC school has caught Robert's attention.
"Georgia has caught my eye
too. They have been sending me a bunch of letters. I like how they play."
The
Hattiesburg native is receiving plenty of letters from various programs around
the country.
"UCLA, Colorado, Duke, UAB, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and
the state schools (MSU, OM, USM) are writing me a lot."
Stay tuned
to Scout.com as we will be putting up clips from Robert Johnson, along
with Steve McNair Jr and Jay Hughes in the very near future.
