ORLANDO -- Team White defeated Team Black 27-16 on Sunday night in the Under Armour All-America Game. The game was a hard hitting, solid defensive ball game that featured some big plays by some the vaunted playmakers. Both teams had a solid week of practice and the players seemed to really enjoy everything about the week.
Greg Reid opened the game with a 37 yard kickoff return. The Black started Russell Shepard at quarterback and after a nine yard gain they were the recipient of a personal foul penalty for 15 yards setting them up in great field position. After a first down, Shepard was sacked and the White settled for a field goal attempt by Dustin Hopkins. It was blocked by Ronnel Lewis.
The White wasted no time as Matt Barkley strutted out onto the field for First-and-10 from their own 29. Barkley hit Marlon Brown on a deep slant and Brown did the rest, taking it to the house for a 71-yard touchdown catch.
The Black turned to Josh Nunes who immediately hit future Stanford teammate Jamal Patterson for back-to-back short completions. After a Giles run, Nunes hit Giles for an 11 yard gain. Giles ran the ball for five yards and it was 2nd and five from the White 29. Three straight incompletions by Nunes ended the drive.
The White took over at the 29 with Barkley at the helm again. Barkley hit Alshon Jeffrey for a beautiful 17-yard completion on 3rd-and-15 to keep the drive alive. A snap over the head of Barkley put the White behind the chains and two plays later they were forced to punt. The Black took over at their own 18 with Garrett Gilbert at quarterback. Jamaal Berry ripped off a 15 yarder and two plays later showed more big play ability with a 20 yard reception as Gilbert looked to his 3rd option. After a Andre Debose reverse, Justin Chaisson burst through the line and sacked Gilbert for a five yard loss. After two Gilbert incompletions, the Black was forced to punt.
Barkley came out hot again, hitting Brown for a 10-yarder and then Morrell Pressley for 15 yards. After two incompletions, it was 3rd and 10 from the 35 and Barkley hit Jamal Reid for a 35 yard touchdown on a magnificent pass-and-catch down the right sideline to stake the White to a 14-0 lead.
The Black needed something to happen and they turned to UCLA commit Richard Brehaut. He came in and scrambled for seven yards, but then Trent Richardson was stopped for a five yard loss. It was 3rd and 8 from the 31 and Greg Reid showed his big play ability from the cornerback spot with a tremendous interception .
The Black immediately took advantage when Shepard hit Debose on a 92 yard touchdown. Shepard lofted the ball over Brandon Smith and Debose did the rest showing his electrifying speed as he raced down the sideline.
The Black then stepped up on defense by forcing a three and out. After a punt, the Black was looking to get themselves back in the game, but a Shepard fumble was recovered by Lewis and returned for a 24 yard touchdown.
It was Nunes turn to get the Black back into the game now down 21-6, but the White defense led by Craig Loston once again stepped up and forced a three and out. Moses Alipate entered the game for the White and hit Pressley on an 11 yarder. Three plays later he hit Jamal Reid for 22 yards and they were on the move again. However, the Black defense stepped up and 4th and 16 from the 37, an Alipate pass going incomplete. Into the half, White led the black, 21-6.
After a field goal, the Black got themselves back in the game in the second half with a 15 yard run by Shepard on a nice outside run that saw him outrun the defense to the pylon.
The 4th quarter saw two field goals for the White to ice the game.
The Black could not capitalize on a few opportunities in the passing game and the White defense was just lights out all game.
