Pasadena (Calif.) Maranatha quarterback Matthew Schilz has committed to play in the MAC.
"Matt committed to Bowling Green," said his mother, Staci. "He is real excited about it and thinks its a perfect fit."
Under new head coach Dave Clawson, Bowling Green offered Schilz a chance to be in a pass-friendly offense.
"The coaches love to throw the ball and they run a no-huddle spread offense that has been very successful for their quarterbacks in the past," said Schilz.
And the tradition of Bowling Green also made an impression.
"The school has a rich history, is a conference leader, and has gone to bowl games pretty consistently," said Schilz. "It has a small college town atmosphere that really appeals to Matt. It is a place where we believe Matt will flourish."
Schilz talked with Clawson and his offensive coordinator.
"He committed over the phone to Coach Clawson and offensive coordinator Coach Warren Ruggiero," said Schilz.
Schilz initially committed to Kansas State, but when the Wildcats brought Bill Snyder back as head coach, a proponent of a ground-heavy offense, Schilz and Kansas State parted ways. Other opportunities arose, but Bowling Green was the best fit.
"He had plenty of opportunities to go elsewhere, but he felt this was the right place for him," said Schilz.
Schilz will visit Bowling Green officially on January 16th.
