Ronald McCrory, the 5-foot-10, 165-pound two-star wide receiver from Chaminade College Prep High School in West Hills, Calif., missed seven games during his senior season with a fractured left elbow. He didn’t require any surgery and says he was 100 percent for the final four games of the season.
McCrory finished with 19 receptions for approximately 500 yards and five touchdowns.
Ranked as Scout.com’s No. 150 wide receiver, McCrory has offers from Wyoming and Idaho State and says those two now lead slightly over New Mexico State, Arizona, Arizona State and Washington.
“I think my injury really messed things up,” he said. “A lot of schools didn’t see me play early on and they offered other guys.
“Both Arizona and Washington told me that I’m still in their pipeline,” McCrory said. “They are waiting to see who doesn’t take their offer and if something opens up I’ll be next in line. If either Arizona or Arizona State offer, I’ll take it.”
He says that the Wildcats are showing more interest than the Sun Devils. “I visited both unofficially as a junior and loved them,” he said. “I really fell in love with both places and would love going to either one.”
McCrory says he also believes that New Mexico State may be close to offering. “They’ve been recruiting me a lot too,” he said. “They told me they really want me to visit them officially and I’ll be setting that up soon.”
The only official visit that he has scheduled thus far is to Idaho State on Jan. 16. “It seems like a good school,” he said. “The coaches are real good and they really sold me on them. They told me to give them a chance and come out for a visit and see how I like it.
“They really seem like good people,” he said. “So I’m gonna go out there and see if it fits me.”
McCrory says he also plans to visit Wyoming officially. “I’ll definitely visit them too,” he said. “I really like the spread offense they run and the new coaches seem cool. They like to pass the ball a lot and have a real good quarterback. The team is building up and is still real young.
“Also the coaches at Wyoming really try to make me feel comfortable,” he said. “The talk to me like family and make me feel very wanted.”
Growing up, McCrory followed USC, but knows that the Trojans are a huge long shot. “It’s close to home and I just love how they win every year. They are definitely my team, but they’ve got so much talent already. I don’t see myself going there.”
The Trojans haven’t been recruiting McCrory.
McCrory is optimistic he’ll get more offers. “I don’t think I’ll sign on signing day,” he said. “I’d like to wait and see how everything plays out and see if something opens up.”
He says he can bench 215-pounds, squat 325 and claims a 36-inch vertical jump.
“I’m quick and have great breakaway speed,” he said. “I also have big play making ability and when I get the ball in open spaces…I take it to the house.
“I want to work on shedding tacklers better and not go down,” he said. “I’m trying to bulk up and add about 10 pounds.”
McCrory also runs track and has a personal 100m best of 10.8 and 22.6 in the 200m. He has no plans to run track in college.
He says he wants to major in computer science and reports a 2.6 core GPA and a 860 SAT, which he is retaking on Jan. 24.
