Meridian (MS) High School wide receiver Chris Smith is back from his official visit to Mississippi…
The Endless Season
Chris Smith profile "I have been staying in the weight room trying to stay in shape," said Smith about his off season activities. "I have been running a little track off and on, but the main thing is just lifting and running." The 1st team All-State receiver has a little administrative matter to take care of prior to his trip this weekend. "I have to sign up with the clearinghouse before Thursday, so I am going to up there on Friday," explained Chris. "I am going to get everything together like I need to. I just have to keep working hard in a couple of my classes. I am going to have all of that together. You can believe that." The Bulldogs hosted many of their commitments two weeks ago, but Chris was not included in that number. "I was supposed to come the same weekend Tyler came in, but my mama had to work, so I had to come for the 30th," said Smith. "This weekend is guaranteed. We're coming for sure. My mom is real excited about going up there too. "She wants to see what kind of coaches I am going to have and the people I am going to be around and things like that. She wants to see all of the facilities and everything. I have already seen everything, but I want her to go and see it all." There will be over a dozen uncommitted prospects on campus along with Smith this weekend. Chris reports he will be doing his part to offer those prospects some friendly advice. "I was one of the first ones to commit for '09, so I am going to get everybody else to come along," said Chris. "Chad Bumphis is coming now. That's what's up now. I was talking with him earlier today. I asked him if he was working hard. He said he's working hard too. I have been talking to him about coming for a long time. I never wanted to pressure him, but I always knew he was going to come." Smith and Bumphis both made their claims to fame wearing the number eight on their respective jerseys. With the number coming open next fall, the two have talked about the potential problem and a solution. "I am going to work hard for it, but if somebody beats me out I will go get another number," said Smith. "Chad is talking about getting #1 and I have been talking to the coaches about #8. They tell me it's open, but I have to go earn it." The chance to go earn it in more ways then one is something Chris is eager to undertake. He sees brighter days ahead for the Bulldog fans. "I am excited about getting up there," said the excitable Smith. "I want to to get this thing together. I never stopped working all year. Even after we won the state championship, I just kept on working. The season never ended for me."
