Coach Spotlight: Bobby Massie
"We had three years with Bobby," said Rocco. "He was a starter since his sophomore year, and developed into an outstanding lineman. He also was a great defensive player as well at nose guard in our 3-4 defense earning first team All-State (Virginia) as on both offense and defense." "Early on, all we had was a big body," said Rocco of the 6-7, 335-pound Massie. "Bobby's a student of the game. Through hard work he learned various techniques, blocking schemes, and that aspect of the game, which has helped to separate him from being just a big body to an elite prospect." Massie had many scholarship offers from major colleges and accepted Virginia Tech's. However, when it became apparent Massie would just miss qualifying by the NCAA, he decided to take a step back, and enroll in Hargrave to work on his grades and his game. "What you're getting is a ready-made player in Bobby," said his former high school coach. "At HMA, he's one year older, stronger physically, and has every bit of what you want in an offensive tackle." Massie helped his team to a state championship in his senior season at Liberty Christian. "Bobby was a central part of us being able to win the state, playing both right tackle and nose tackle," said Rocco. Although Massie played right tackle for Coach Rocco and played right tackle at prep school for Coach Robert Prunty at Hargrave, Rocco thinks his future is possibly on the left side. "With his athleticism and pass blocking ability, I think he'll probably move over to left tackle in college." Massie's former coach says the two have maintained a good relationship since he left Liberty Christian last year. "Bob's a likeable guy. He's kinda quiet and stays to himself, but once you get inside he's a real joy to be around," Rocco said. "He's real laid-back and just enjoys life. I've gone fishing with him. We're still friends even though I'm no longer his coach." Massie had 44 tackles and eight sacks at nose tackle during his senior year in Rocco's 3-4 defense.
