Dolapo Macarthy, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound three-star quarterback from Merrillville, Ind., decided not to sign on national signing day and says he’s still not near making a decision.
“Right now I’m playing basketball and our playoffs start in a few weeks, so I haven’t really had time to think about it,” Macarthy said. “I’m just not ready. I didn’t feel like I could make a decision on Feb. 4. It’s just not enough time for me.”
Macarthy, ranked as the No. 56 quarterback in the country by Scout.com, says he’s narrowed his choices down to Central Michigan, Grand Valley State and Eastern Michigan. At one point he says he also had offers from Indiana, Iowa and Bowling Green but his world has changed.
“But they already got their quarterback,” he said. “I don’t have those offers anymore.”
Macarthy hasn’t taken any official visits, but did visit Grand Valley State unofficially last Monday. “It’s pretty close to home,” he said. “They are only like two hours away and it was really nice over there. Our kicker (Ryan Stokes) signed with them too, so that’s pretty cool.”
He says he’s strongly considering the Div. II Lakers from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference but says that Central Michigan is still solidly his top choice.
“I like the offense they run (at Central Michigan),” Macarthy said. “I’ve been up there before and the people are great and I like the coaches a lot. I felt like I’d fit in well with them. They run the spread and have a lot of weapons there. They have some huge guys up front and are recruiting pretty well. They have a good class coming in.”
Macarthy says he initially thought he’d commit early, but as the recruiting process went on, the less sure he felt about his choices. “I really wanted to get it over with,” he said.
“But I never felt like I found a school that I wanted to go to,” he said. “I wasn’t planning on taking this long, but now that I’m in basketball I really don’t have any kind of timetable. Whenever it happens, it happens.”
Macarthy plays small forward on his basketball team and is averaging 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks per game. “I’m only going to focus on football in college,” he said. “I think it would be pretty tough to do both.”
Final senior (9-4) stats: 1,800 yards passing/10 TDs
Macarthy says he’s considering majoring in business management or going pre-law and reports a 2.5 core GPA and 22 ACT. He’s fully qualified and academics aren’t a concern.
