Initial Offer for Tomlinson
The next L.T.? Those initials have belonged to some impressive football players over the years and Lane Tech's Laken Tomlinson may soon add his name to the list. The 6'5, 285-lb junior is one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the Midwest and on Sunday, was promised his first offer. "I picked up [an offer] from Illinois," he said, "it actually came through today. I called Coach Mitchell and was talking to him and he said he mailed it out. I'm really excited actually, I mean Coach Mitchell has been good to me and they treat me well." Tomlinson says he has taken several unofficial visits to Illinois already and there will certainly be more in the future. While the Fighting Illini are the first program to offer, there are many others showing him interest. "The schools I'm hearing from are Duke, Northwestern, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame and Northern Illinois, New Mexico too," Tomlinson reported and as for junior days, said, "I'll be going to the Michigan one and Notre Dame. I've been to Iowa before, like two weeks ago and I've been to Northwestern too." With Tomlinson, versatility is the name of the game. He has played both tackle and guard as well as defensive tackle. He says he is mostly being recruited on the offensive side of the ball, but Northwestern has expressed interest in him as a defensive tackle as well. In addition to his gridiron success, he is also a varsity wrestler and a fine student. "My grade point average is a 3.2 and I'm taking the ACT on April 22nd. Education is number one for me. I'm undecided on what I would like to study, but I'm thinking about pre-med." With those types of goals in mind, there is little doubt that Tomlinson has everything together. And although he has a good idea of what he would like to study in school, where he will do it is still a cloudier picture. "All the schools I've talked to treat me good, so no favorites, I like all of them."
