Pinebelt Signal Caller Prepares for 2009

Hattiesburg High School put together a strong season in 2008. The Tigers' playoff run ended in the second round with a loss to eventual 5A state champ Meridian. With HHS on the upswing, quarterback Tevin Champman thinks it just might be his team's turn.

"I have had a few schools that have called the coach and ask coach about me," said Chapman. "I like USM, Memphis, West Virginia, Mississippi State and a few other schools."

The versatile play maker believes he has what it takes to make plays on the next level.

"I think I am real good when the pocket collapses," said Tevin. "I am good at reading the defense. I am more of a dual threat type of quarterback."

The All-Area selection hopes to parlay his playing abilities into a college degree as well as successful college career.

"I am looking for a school where I can go and play and be successful on the field, but I want to find the school that is best in what I want to major on," said Chapman.

The Tigers will make the move upwards to the newly formed 6A classification in 2009. Many of Hattiesburg's rivals will make the move with them, but Tevin believes that is a good thing.

"I know we need more team leadership," said Tevin. "We need to work harder and get more experience together. We feel like if we work hard we can make the best of everything this year. We believe in each other and we see that it's pretty much wide open this year."
