While denying favorites, Texas linebacker Shaun Lewis admits to liking Texas A&M and Oklahoma and has already visited both. “A&M is only like one and half hours away,” Lewis said. “But that’s not a big deal. I went to their junior day a few weeks ago and loved it. Oklahoma actually reminded me of A&M with the environment and everything. But Oklahoma is already where they need to be..."

Shaun Lewis, the 6-foot-1, 207-pound four-star outside linebacker from Hightower High School in Sugarland, Texas, finished his junior season with 134 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

“I have great instincts and have a nose for the ball,” Lewis said. “I have great moves and can make tackles. I just have pretty good speed and pursuit.”

While Lewis says he’s a good tackler, he admits he’d like to work on his open field tackling. “I want to be more of a sure tackler,” he said. “I’d like to be able to take the guy down every time, especially in the open field.”

Lewis says he followed Miami and Texas as a youngster. “I remember watching that national championship against Ohio State,” he said. “I was a real big fan of that team and especially Willis McGahee.

“Texas we watched because of Vince Young,” he said. “He’s a Houston kid, so we liked following him.”

Neither the ‘Canes nor the Longhorns have offered Lewis yet, but he says he believes Miami will. “They are recruiting me a lot,” Lewis said. “I think they’ll end up offering me. I’m not sure about Texas.”

Despite not having an offer from those two, Lewis says he does have around 20 actual offers already. “I can’t even remember all of them,” he said. “I know I’ve got Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, Florida, Notre Dame, Alabama, Houston, Baylor…man, there are a lot.”

Although Lewis says he hasn’t narrowed down his favorites yet, he admits to liking A&M and Oklahoma and has already visited both.

“A&M is only like one and half hours away,” Lewis said. “But that’s not a big deal. I went to their junior day a few weeks ago and loved it. I really like the environment there. I love the tradition and the whole thing with the 12th Man that they’ve got going. The fans are ridiculous and the students never sit. They really get involved and that’s a lot of fun.”

Another thing that stands out about the Aggies is their coaching staff. “I really liked all the coaches,” he said. “They seemed like good guys that have a lot of integrity and character.”

Lewis says the Aggies are recruiting him the hardest. “They send more letters than anybody else,” he said. “I get handwritten letters from almost all the coaches.”

Oklahoma is the only other school that Lewis has already been to and he says he loved it. “It’s Oklahoma,” Lewis said. “What’s not to like? They have everything that you look for in a school, plus they are already established and look to win the national championship every season.

“Oklahoma actually reminded me of A&M with the environment and everything,” he said. “But Oklahoma is already where they need to be. A&M is still improving and building up.”

Although Lewis doesn’t have any firmly scheduled camps or combines yet, he says he plans to travel a lot this summer. “I want to go to as many schools as possible,” he said. “I’d like to go all over the country.”

Some of the schools that he says he’d like to visit are Alabama, Notre Dame, UCLA and Oregon, to name a few. “I’m probably gonna go to the USC Rising Stars camp this spring, so I’ll check out UCLA while I’m there,” he said.

Lewis has never been to the west coast and admits he’s intrigued. “I don’t really know a lot about UCLA or Oregon besides what I’ve seen on TV,” he said. “I need to do some research and see what it’s like.”

Besides heading out west, Lewis is also eager to head in South Bend’s direction. “I told their coaches that I really want to come up and visit them,” he said. “I like the program a lot. They have a young quarterback and it just feels like the team is heading towards success.”

Lewis says he’s friends with DeMeco Ryans, the middle linebacker for the Houston Texans, and gets advice from him as well. “He played at Alabama and we’ve talked about them,” he said.

“I’d like to go see what it’s like there too,” he said about the Crimson Tide. “We talk on a regular basis and DeMeco’s a big help. Early on I wasn’t really getting a lot of attention and he was there and told me not to worry about it and just keep working hard. He’s always talking to me about fundamentals and makes sure I’m doing good.”

Lewis says he’s not close to making an early decision and also denies he has any time frame. “When the time is right I’ll do it,” he said. “I have no idea when that’ll be.

“I want to major in engineering,” he said. “I want to find a school where I feel like I belong and can make an impact. I don’t need to be at the biggest school or some Hall of Fame school. If I’m comfortable and happy and able to play then that’s all that matters.”

Lewis says he can bench 350-pounds, squat 485 and claims a 36-inch vertical jump.

He reports a 3.0 core GPA, a 1360 three-part SAT and is already qualified.
