A recruit that values education above all else will always get a look from the coaches at Duke. And…
Signee Spotlight: John Farrell
"It is the best of every world you can imagine," John Farrell said. "The campus is unbelievable. It is just what coach Cutcliffe is doing." "I am probably going to play earlier at Duke than I would at some other schools I was looking at. The main thing was the mix between the academics and the athletics. It just seemed like the place for me." "Of course I want to try to play football past college, but I am a realist. The odds are it is not going to happen. I have the option of coming out of school with a degree as respected as Duke's. It can open so many doors." "Everywhere coach Cutcliffe has gone he has won games. There is no reason why Duke is not going to be the same. If you look back at last year we were like four or five plays away from being bowl eligible." Strengths: "I am pretty versatile. Going up to Duke I am going to play H-back. I get to line up all over the place. I line up in the backfield, at tight end and split end sometimes." "I really think me being able to move all over the field will allow the coaches to not have to switch personnel. I stay on my blocks really well. I am pretty fast for how big I am." Needs Work: "I think just being away from home is going to kill me, for real. I have been in the same school for 13 years. It is just going to be a big change." "As far as football goes, the speed of the game is going to be something that I am going to have to really get use to. It is going to be so much faster than high school. I have got to get bigger and put on more weight." Recruiting coach/relationship: "My coach is Ron Middleton. He is also the tight ends coach. We have a great relationship. When I was debating on which school I was going to decide on I looked back at all of the coaches I was going to play for. He is the guy that I can see spending four or five years with." "The thing he [Middleton] said to me was, ‘I am going to be the first one who is going to get on you if you do something wrong, but I am also going to be the first one to be there to congratulate you when you do something good.' " "He is just a really good guy. I can tell he is going to take care of his players. He really cares about them not just on the football field, but care for them as much if not more off the field." Redshirt?: "Coach Middleton is also the special teams coach. He sees me traveling, playing and starting as a personal protector on the punt team as soon as I walk in. He [Middleton] said, ‘If you travel because of special teams you are going to have to know the offense and what the tight end does.' " "I would be fine either way. Redshirting, I get another year. If I play you cannot complain with that." Plans to enroll and roommates: "I am kind of up in the air about that. I am playing baseball right now. My guess is we are going to go pretty far into state. The state championship is late May." "Coach Middleton wants me to come up May 13th. I think it is going to be a last minute decision if I am going to do the early semester. The second one starts June 27th. I think I will start up summer school and work-outs then." "I am rooming with Sean Schroeder. He is the quarterback from California. We already have a pretty good relationship. He is a really cool guy." Farrell has a 3.75 GPA and made a 1260 on the SAT. He plans to major in Economics, minor in Public Policy and then get a certificate in Market and Management. Farrell said, "I want to be on Wall Street one day." His date of birth is 5/30/90.
