Welch Adds To Offer List

As one of Ohio’s top prospects Alex Welch has seen programs from the Big Ten, ACC, MAC and now the Big East jump on board. We spoke with Alex about his newest offer and why he was surprised to receive it.

If you’re looking for a pure tight end you look no farther than Alex Welch of Cincinnati (Ohio) Elder High School. With great physical size Welch reminds many of a shorter version of another former Panther star Kyle Rudolph. On Friday an offer came that really wasn’t expected.

“Cincinnati offered me today, Welch said by phone. “They’ve been talking with Coach (Doug) Ramsey about me in the past week and told him they now wanted to offer me.”

While excited about getting an offer from his hometown university, Welch didn’t expect to have Cincinnati in his plans.

“When they received a verbal commitment from Alex Smith they told me they were only going to take one tight end. So I thought it was over with them. But they’ve been watching my film and feel that I’m more of a big-skill guy like a Connor Barwin and had a scholarship to offer me.”

With a planned trip to watch a spring practice, Welch has the Bearcats high on his list.

“I’m really interested in Cincinnati and look forward to learning more about the program and what the university has to offer.”

At this time Alex holds eleven offers from the following programs.

Boston College, Illinois, North Carolina State, Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana, Wisconsin, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Maryland and Kansas with more on the way.
