Wesley Flowers, the 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive lineman from Edison High School in Fresno, Calif., has an offers from Fresno State and Washington and now says the Huskies are his top choice.
“I really like the Pac-10,” Flowers said. “The coaches at U-Dub seem like the kind of guys I wanna play for and I like that they are rebuilding. It seems like the kind of place I could come into and play early and help them out.”
The Huskies just offered Flowers a few weeks ago and he says that it came as somewhat of a shock. “My coach told me that they called and they wanted me to call them,” he said.
“I called them and talked with coach Steve Sarkisian and (defensive coordinator) Nick Holt,” he said. “That’s when they offered me. I was surprised because before then I didn’t think they were even recruiting me.”
He says the Huskies lead slightly over USC, Oregon, Stanford and California. Of those, only Washington has offered with the Trojans, Cardinal and Bears showing very little interest.
“My dad really likes USC,” Flowers said. “It’s not too far away and it’s a great program. I got like one letter from them but that’s it.”
But Flowers plans on attending a few camps and hopes to get on the Trojans radar. “I’ll be at the Nike camp at USC in April and I also want to go to the USC Rising Stars camp. Hopefully I’ll do well and will show them what I can do.”
Flowers also plans on going to the Cal camp this summer and the Under Armour camp at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles. He hasn’t attended any junior days and doesn’t expect to.
While his dad likes USC, he says his mom prefers Stanford. “She likes their academics,” he said. “They aren’t recruiting much either,” he added. “They’ve only sent a few letters.”
Flowers says he followed Miami as a youngster. “They always had a winning team when I was young,” he said. “I also really liked their colors.”
“I just want to go through the whole process,” he said. “You never know who else is gonna offer. I’d hate to commit to someone and miss out on a better opportunity.”
One school that Flowers says he’d love to get an offer from is Oregon. “I really like the area up there,” he said. “I’ve never been to the campus, but I’ve spent some time in Oregon and really liked it. It’s a great place.”
He says the Ducks have been showing some interest and are sending mail.
“I’d really like to play in the Pac-10,” Flowers reiterated. “I’d like to stay somewhat close and all the Pac-10 school are pretty close. I also want a program that supports their student athletes and has tutors available.”
Flowers finished his junior season with 50 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, six sacks and two fumbles caused. “I have a good motor that never stops running,” he said. “I’m a good lateral player and move well from side to side.
“I’m also pretty positive on the field and have a good attitude,” he said.
“I definitely want to improve my speed,” he said. “I also need to be a little stronger and more physical.”
He says he can bench 305-pounds and squats 350.
Flowers reports a 3.1 core GPA and is awaiting his March 14 SAT results.
