Hutson Mason is a 6-foot-3, 189 pound quarterback out of Lassiter in Marietta, Ga. and he is hearing from some schools, but not as many as he should be.
His offers are only from Iowa and Georgia Southern at this time and that is not a good representation of his talent level. He threw for over 3,700 yards in 2008 in Coach Lindsey’s spread offense and he showed in Atlanta last week that he can make the throws necessary to play at a high level.
The arm strength Mason displayed last Friday may have been the biggest surprise. It is hard to tell just how live his arm is on film in the spread, but he showed plenty of arm strength at the combine. He made strong throws to the sideline, he zipped the ball down the middle of the field, and he tossed a nice deep ball as well.
Accuracy was there, he did well when making his drops, and he set his feet nicely before delivering the ball to the receivers.
This spring should be a big time for Mason as the college coaches hit the road for the evaluation period. Lassiter begins spring practice early in May, and new offers should arrive during that time.
Nash Nance is in a little different situation than Mason. Nance transferred after last football season from Darlington to Calhoun. While the offense that Coach Lamb runs fits Nance a lot better, he does not even have the starting job yet.
Calhoun played in the state championship game in 2008 and QB Michael Johnson is returning, so Nance will be competing for the job this spring.
He is working hard and he has become a different type of quarterback in just six months. Last year when he was first identified, his accuracy and footwork stood out, but his arm strength, release point, and consistency needed work.

The 6-foot-4, 205 pound signal caller has put in many hours on and off the field to become a better QB and he was more consistent in all phases of his game last Friday. Just like Mason, Nance showed improved arm strength. Nance was zipping the ball into the receivers hands with good accuracy.
Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Tennessee-Chattanooga, and Harvard have offered Nance a scholarship, but he wants and deserves more.
Shaw edged out both Nance and Mason for the top QB at this event, but all three had outstanding days. Shaw is committed to South Carolina, so he is set in recruiting, but Nance and Mason are working hard to give themselves more options.
Both 2010 quarterbacks have the tools to be highly recruited quarterbacks and they should be getting a lot of attention this spring as schools get on the road to evaluate talent.
Hutson Mason and Nash Nance showed they belong in the top group when talking quarterbacks in the Peach State after impressive performances in Atlanta on April 10.
