Travis Dickson stops by Ole Miss
Posted Apr 16, 2009
One of Ole Miss' biggest priorities for their '09 class had a chance to stop by Wednesday for the last day of "pads" during Spring drills. What did the Ocean Springs (MS) native think?
"It was a great trip," added
. "Overall, it was a good trip. The facilities are top notch, and I had a good time spending a lot of time with coaches Dickerson, Price, and Shibest. I also got a chance to talk to Coach Nutt and seeing how much of a bond he has with his players really impressed me."
Travis' sister graduated from Ole Miss recently, so he had already been there a few times before, but he left the campus with an even more favorable impression than before.
"I would have to defenitley say the trip went better than I was expecting. I had memories of Ole Miss, but it had been a while since I had really looked at everything. We took a tour in a golf cart of the campus and Manning Way, and I did not realize it is that nice up there. The whole campus is great."
What suprised Scout.com's #26 nationally rated defensive the most?
"Like I said earlier, just how close Coach Nutt is with his players. He was having 7 or 8 of his players come to his farm after practice to go fishing. He has a unique relationship with his players."
The Ole Miss coaches are torn on which side of the ball Dickson will play, and that was evident at practice.
"Well, Coach Shibest was pulling me to the TE group, and then Coach Price would run over there and tell me that I need to watch his DE's (laugh). They were just having a good time with me. I am really not sure which position I will play in college. I feel like I need equal improvement on both sides of the ball."
What were his observations from practice?
"The atmosphere, they came out and knew what to do. Their practices are fast paced, and the coaches do not even say anything to the players because they already know what to do. You can tell the are well coached. It is so orgranized and everybody has a full understanding on what they are supposed to be doing."
Which colleges has the
All-Coast team selection visited so far this Spring?
"I have been to Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, and Auburn for practices. It was the last day for pads today for Ole Miss, so I had to make it up today. I was supposed to come up two weeks back, but I had to make up a wain out game in baseball."
Anymore practices on tap?
"Spring training is about to start up so I doubt it."
Travis talks about his MSU trip.
"I had been up there for a camp before, but the way they practice, they had a real physical day out there. It was impressive."
"I have been to Auburn a few times before, but while I was watching the TE drills, they had 4 or 5 fights break out. It was intense. It made me ready to put the pads on and tangle it up with those guys. I love the physical aspect of the game, and I think Auburn is going to be a very physical team in the future."
"Just spending time with my brother (
) and sitting in the TE meetings with him and learning how everything is done. It was nice meeting the new TE coach and getting to know him better."
Any college camps this summer?
"I might go to the Passing Camp at Millsaps that our team goes to every year. It is in May. I spoke to Coach Dickerson (at Ole Miss) about coming to the 1 Day camp so I could spend some more one on one time with their coaches.
, who also came with me on this trip and is our QB, is also going to their 1 Day camp so we are going to take the trip together. That really is it for now. I have a lot going on this summer"
