CINCINNATI, OH. – We had more than 200 prospects on the turf at Princeton High School on Sunday.…
Q&A: Austin White
Whether it was running back or wide receiver on Sunday, defenders found it tough to stick with Austin White. The Livonia Stevenson (Mich.) star was tough to cover in 1-1s. He took time out from catching passes to catch us up on his happenings. So things have opened up again recruiting wise, why don't you start by telling us who has dropped by: Wisconsin, Ball State, Cincinnati, Missouri, Purdue and I think that's it. Are there any schools scheduled to come or have told you they're coming? I'm not really sure. Actually Michigan and Michigan State both came too. I don't know about anyone else coming in. Purdue and Missouri I didn't know, they just came in, but I ran into them and got to talk to them after school. So have you picked up any new offers recently? I haven't picked up any new offers yet, but I talked to the Missouri coach and he told me he hasn't seen any tape or anything like that, so he wants to look at the tape and maybe make a decision after that. I'm excited about that. Have you mapped out a schedule for this summer yet? Yeah, I definitely want to go down south and probably hit a couple schools. LSU, I'll probably stop by Florida State and Georgia too because they've all been sending me a lot of mail. When you say stop by, do you mean take an unofficial or are you going to camp at those places? I want to camp, hit some 1-day camps and let them see me in a little bit of an action and hopefully get them on board. You got the LSU offer and now that that has had a chance to sink in and you've been able to talk to your parents, what is the feeling about going farther away for school? It's a long way, so if it were to be my decision, I wouldn't be able to come home any time like my brothers would be able to, but my family supports me in whatever I decide. They said it's whatever place feels right for you, that's where we want you to go. It's not a problem really. You were at the Michigan State spring game and got to see your brother out there and he made a lot of plays. How was it to see that and how did you enjoy that day overall? It was nice, it started raining, but then it cleared up. It was good to see my brother out there and making plays because I know he was anxious to get out on the field and it was good to see all the hard work he put in pay off in front of 35,000 people. It made me real excited for football season. It made me really want to get out and play and it's right around the corner now. MSU was one of the first schools to offer you and it seems like lately, with all the interest you've been getting, you don't talk about them as much, is playing there and with your brothers still on the forefront of your mind? Definitely, State's a great program. They put out great running backs every year, so it's not a bad decision. I just want to go see everywhere. I've been up there so much and so often, that I don't need to see what they have ‘cause I've been there so many times. I want to go see places I haven't been, but State's still definitely high on my list and I'm definitely thinking about them and playing again with my brothers would be fun. It's all about what feels right with me though. What about Michigan, what have they said to you recently? This being their second year, they were telling me that I'm the top back on their board right now, but they're offering all these guys and they got nine commitments and they're real heavy in recruiting right now because they don't have the luxury to wait on people. They have their depth chart already set pretty much for the next years and they need people to come in and fill those spots. What they said to me was that we can wait on you for awhile, but we can't be the end all with you because if you don't come here, we don't have the backs to fill your spot. They said we'll wait, you've got time and you can see all the places you want to see, but just know that we can't wait all the way down to the deadline because they need to know and if other people want to commit, they can only hold them off for so long. Knowing that, and looking at everybody else, when do you want to make a decision by? You know, before, a little earlier, I was thinking maybe after fall, after all my visits, but if I can get down in the summer and make enough visits to where I feel comfortable of where my decision will be, it might be before then, but only time will tell. Really it's how many places I can see. I want to visit as many places as possible. I want to get my eyes out and get my ears out and see all these places for myself so I can get the feel for it. Looking ahead to your high school season, you looked pretty good on defense at our 7-7, might we see you on defense this year? Yeah, I talked to my coach about it and I think I'll play a little bit of safety. And they're still going to mix it up with you on offense, split you out and do some different things? Yea, coach is going to try to put me in the slot a little bit more, get involved in the passing game instead of being so much of a decoy like last year. I'll be in a lot of places this fall for offense, because we have a lot of different schemes and our line is looking good. So how is the team looking overall? Do you guys have a chance to get back to the dome? We have a strong core group of guys who work real hard. We lose some talent, but we return four out of six linemen and that's the base of our team. If we work hard and if those guys work hard this summer, we'll have a shot.
