"I am very elusive," added Jarvis West
(ran a 4.3 forty at the latest
combine). "I feel like I can not be caught from behind. If I get by you,
it is over. I do not see anyone catching me. I have a little power for someone
my size too. That catches them off guard a little. I am just real quick and fast."
That was evident by his special teams play last year as he returned 5 kickoffs
for TD's and had another three called back due to penalties. West was named 2nd
Team All-Suncoast as a kick returner. He was also named the Red Zone Player of
the Year in Pinollas County.
"I play tailback, slot, and receiver. Most of the colleges want me to play
slot and return kicks though."
How is spring practice going?
"It is going pretty good although I am in therapy right now because of a
pulled hamstring. I should be ready by the spring game."
As fast as Jarvis is he knows he has to get stronger for the college level.
"I want to put on 40 good pounds before I go to college. I want to get my
bench up to 315 before I leave. I can squat 450 right now, so I already have pretty
good lower body strength."
Colleges have taken notice.
"Indiana came by practice. Miami came by but I missed them. I had already
left school. They are coming back next week. Ole Miss came by. Georgia came by,
and a couple more have come by, but I can not think of them."
Any phone calls this month?
"I spoke to Syracuse last week, and I talk to Ole Miss a lot. I can't really
think of them because I get so many, but I talk to Ole Miss the most."
What is going on with Ole Miss?
"I have a good relationship with those guys. They want me to be another
and fill in his position. I knew Dexter when he was Largo.
I use to watch him play. He is pretty shifty, but I feel like I am a little
more shiftier than he is and probably a little more quicker than he is. I feel
I can do some of that Brandon James
(at Florida) stuff. But Coach (Chris) Vaughn
keeps me up to date on what is going on over there. He tells me what I need
to be doing to prepare myself to get there, both on the field and in the classroom.
That goes for anywhere I go. He pretty much keeps me straight on everything.
Coach Vaughn takes care of me."
What did Syracuse say when they called?
"They want me to return the ball for them. They have one guy like me on their
team and he is a senior. They want me to take his spot. They actually think I
can kick too (laugh). I am a pretty good punter now. I averaged over 43 yards
a punt last year. I have good accuracy, but I do not think I am going to be kicking
in college (laugh)."
Another SEC school is also trying to get in the picture.
"Auburn is looking at me. I have been talking to Auburn lately. I also
visited Florida. I went to their spring game and met some people."
How did the Florida visit go?
"It was nice. I got to meet a couple of the players, and I sat by their
goal post during the game. I got a good look at everything. I got to see their
locker room and weight room. I have never seen anything like it. I love their
stadium too. Tim Jackson
was kind of like my host. He introduced me to everyone
on the team and took me around their campus. He was real cool."
Who are West's top schools at the present time?
"Ole Miss is at the top. I am kind of interested in Georgia, but they are
not writing me a whole lot. I would like to go anywhere in the SEC. I would not
mind going to Nebraska too, but they are kind of far away. I like West Virginia,
and I would not mind going to Florida too. If none of that works, I wouldn't mind
going to South Florida."
Why South Florida?
"I got family there. I met Coach Lubick. He is a nice guy. I just like
their school. I love their coach too. I do not know. I just like the environment."
Any camps this summer?
"My coach is helping me with all of that stuff. I want to go see all of
the schools who have offered me, but times are tough, and I do not have that
kind of money right now."
At first glance, you would think that the Gibbs (FL) slot receiver was in junior
high, not high school. He is all of 5' 6", 145, but when you watch him
play, you know exactly why schools like Florida State, Ole Miss, Nebraska, West
Virginia, Syracuse, and South Florida have offered. Rarely do you find legit
4.3 prospects, but this Saint Petersburg resident is one of them.
