Stone Mountain (GA) Stephenson High School defensive tackle Michael Thornton has been turning heads…
UGA and GT offer in-state DL
"Georgia came by on Tuesday and Georgia Tech came by on Wednesday," said Michael Thornton. "Both schools talked to my coach during the day, both watched me practice in the afternoon, and then both told Coach [Ron] Gartrell that they were going to offer me a scholarship the night that they stopped by." "Both schools had been recruiting me for a little while, but the offers were a little surprising I guess. I never know when schools are going to offer me." Thornton has been to both campuses, but he has really only visited one of the two in-state programs. "I went to the NIKE Camp over at Georgia, so I saw their practice fields and a few other things during the camp, but I have never visited them before as a recruit. I did go to Georgia Tech's Junior Day earlier this year and that was nice. I really like the way the coaches are open to their recruits and they have nice facilities too." "All I know about Georgia is what I saw at the camp and what I have seen on T.V. I have talked to Coach Garner on the phone, so I know a little about him. We mainly talked about me though and why they offered me." So where do the in-state schools stand on his list? "Everyone is still the same for me," said the 6-foot-1, 273 pound defensive tackle out of Stephenson. "I don't have anyone on top yet. I have not had time to do much research on too many schools because of school, spring practice, and things like that, so I will do a lot of that this summer." Spring practice wrapped up last week and he has just a few more days of school remaining, so he is ready to start evaluating the 17 programs that have offered him a scholarship. He plans to camp at Georgia and a couple of schools this summer as well as take a few handful unofficial visits. After that, he will likely trim his list. "I don't know how far I will cut it, but I will narrow my schools down this summer probably late in June. I will have time to really concentrate on recruiting and look at what all the schools are about." After that, he plans to commit between late summer and mid season. He currently carries a 3.3 GPA in the classroom and he posted 95 tackles, 4 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles as a junior.
