Offers roll in for OT Brent Benedict
Posted May 27, 2009
The 6' 6", 290 pound offensive tackle out of The Bolles (FL) is one of the more sought after linemen in the South. What makes him so unique?
"I think I have been around a year round weight program all of my high school life, and I have been around a staff that has been around for 40 years," added
. "This is the winningest program around here, and the way they coach and teach us the finer points has been a big part of my success. They are all about how character, discipline, and obviously my size and strength help a lot too."
What is the All-State lineman working on this off season?
"We have run the Wing-T since I have been here, but we plan on passing the ball a lot more this year. We are working on pass protection more because we have always run the ball, but now we are going to throw it more. For a lot of the younger guys, you have a hard time with pass protection, but really it is coming pretty easy for me."
How many offers has The Bolles native earned?
And the newest offer is?
"Missouri and Ole Miss offered me recently too."
When did Ole Miss get involved?
"I sent my game film to them in the regular season. They called and said they liked what they saw. I called Coach Markuson back and also got a chance to talk with Coach Dickerson, who recruits this area. They informed me about the offer and said they really liked my game. We talked about getting me down there this summer. I finish my exams soon so hopefully I will be going over there soon."
Brent has a few friends who attend Ole Miss that have informed him about what the school is like.
"Several of my friends that graduated from here go to Ole Miss. They tell me how much I would love it down there. They said the game day atmosphere was awesome, something about a place called the Grove. I know they play in a special conference, and they also have a great academic program."
Has Benedict been on any prior visits?
"I have been to several ACC schools during Spring break. I visited Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, and I am getting out to Southern Cal and UCLA. Both of them offered. I want to make it over to Alabama and Ole Miss. I am going up to Pennsylvania to see my grandparents, and I am going to go over to Penn State, Notre Dame, and Ohio State while I am up there. All of those colleges have offered me too."
Anything stand out about any of prior visits?
"I thought it would be great to get on campus and narrow it down, but now that I have seen everything, it is making my decision even harder. Each place has its own unique feeling. Some are great academic programs. Some have great football programs and some have a really good program in both fields."
Talk about Virginia Tech.
"Coach Beamer has built a real good relationship with his players, and the campus is beautiful as well."
"Coach Davis is definitely a plus. He spent time in the NFL and won a national championship at Miami."
"I am actually from Greenville (SC), so it is kind of home for me to a certain extent. Death Valley is also a neat atmosphere."
"They won 2 of the last 3 championships. What else is there to say?"
"They are also a national powerhouse in both football and academics. It is a well rounded school."
