Commitment Capsule: Mylan Hicks

Detroit Renaissance cornerback Mylan Hicks is a big pickup for the Michigan State Spartans. How big? Find out right here with analysis, his recruiting story and video highlights of the one they call "Clamps."

His Recruiting Story: We first heard about Mylan Hicks during his sophomore season at Renaissance. With his team up handily in the second half, he got his chance to step in at running back and rushed for 123 yards in that half alone. That prompted Renaissance coaches to let us know they had another great prospect on their hands.

Hicks backed up their early proclamation at Michigan State's camp that summer, clocking a 4.42 in the forty yard dash. His first scholarship offer from Eastern Michigan followed slowly behind that camp.

Throughout his junior season, Hicks would continue to ascend the rankings and gain more notice from colleges. Central Michigan was his second offer, Toledo followed.

It was not until spring of this year though, that Hicks earned the offer he really coveted: Michigan State.

"“I’m real excited about it of course," he said at the time, "the whole thing about going to school for free. From a football aspect, I talked to them about a month ago and they said to just to be patient. I mean, of course, having Chris and Dana being up there, I feel at home, but that doesn’t make me lean any more towards one school. At the end of the day, I’ll still weigh all of my options.”

While schools like Michigan, Wisconsin, Colorado and others would offer as well, Hicks decided to become a Spartan, joining former Renaissance stars Dana Dixon and Chris Norman.

Analysis: We have seen Hicks in game, on film, at 7-7s and in 1-1s and he has been impressive every time. He has very good straight line speed (4.49), but it is his exceptional feet which make him an ideal cover corner. He has also grown since we met him, from 5'9 to 5'11 and is young for his class, as he is currently only 16 years old. He is physical and likes to play up on receivers. His ball skills are good, but he does breakup some passes he should intercept. All in all, this is a great pickup for the Spartans and with a little time in the weight room and continued development, he has a chance to play early.
