Bergman's MVP performance should open eyes

Chris Fetters ( spoke with Issaquah, Wash. quarterback Ryan Bergman Monday, and Bergman let us know that he was voted MVP of the entire Washington State camp from this past weekend. While an offer wasn't forthcoming, it definitely bodes well for a player who wasn't on anyone's radar just a few months ago.

"I was very excited," Bergman said of his award. "I just felt like I threw the ball very well, I didn't throw many incompletions or interceptions."

Issaquah, who also went down there as part of their team camp, won WSU's version of 'Thursday Night Lights', a drill where a team gets four plays from the 10-yard line to score. "I stepped up really big in that, and had a few runs for touchdowns," Bergman said.

Bergman added that teammate Eric Lemke got the Rising Star award for tight ends. Lemke is 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, and will be a sophomore for the Eagles this fall.

So what was the reaction from the Washington State coaches upon seeing Bergman's camp performance? "They didn't say too much, but they congratulated me and said I had a good camp," he said. "They want me to get some more weight on (he's around 165-170 right now). They told me to keep in touch.

When asked about the possibility of Washington State taking two quarterbacks, Bergman was unsure. "They already got (Connor) Halliday right now, so I don't know how that's going to play out," he said. "I have no idea what their plans are."

Ironically enough, Bergman also likes Hawai'i and Boise State, two teams that have also apparently filled their need at quarterback. Hawai'i just received a commitment from Arizona QB Kevin Spain, and the Broncos have a pledge from Independence (Ore.) Central QB Grant Hedrick.

But if any Evergreen State QB has a chance of breaking through with a dominant fall, it's Ryan Bergman. With Joey Bradley taking the Eagles all the way to the state 4A title game last year, Bergman has the pieces in place to take Issaquah on another deep run to the playoffs.
