Georgia native set for July visits
Posted Jul 16, 2009
Scout.com's #24 nationally ranked tight end out of Tucker (GA) visited Michigan State over the 4th of July and is set to tour the Ole Miss and Miami campuses later on this month. To learn more about Quinton Brown, read below.
"I am just getting ready for my visits to Ole Miss and Miami," added
. "I have only been to one individual camp this summer, and that was to Tennessee, but I have been to a few team camps like West Georgia and some 7 on 7 tournaments."
How did the Tennessee camp go?
"My coach told me I should make it to a SEC camp, and I was supposed to go to Georgia's but it was later in the summer, so I thought it would be best to get one in to see how I was going to do. Their (Tenn) coaches were cool. They did a lot of drills with us and showed us how to do them right. Their coaches told me that they have to further evaluate me this season because they did not get a good look at me with me transferring in the middle of the season and all."
Quenton was offered by Ole Miss in early June and has been keeping in close contact ever since.
"Every since they offered me I have been talking to Coach Price a bunch. We talk a lot. He has been trying to get me over there for their camp on July 25th, but I am going to just go on an unofficial visit on Monday or Tuesday. I wanted to go to the camp, but my coach can not get off that day to take me over there so he is going to bring me over there next week."
Brown expands on his relationship with Coach Terry Price.
"He is easy to talk to, and he lets you know where you stand. Coach Price has filled me in on a lot of things about Ole Miss. As far as football, they are always good. And academically, he told me about their graduation percentage and student population. He does not just try to shove things in your face, as far as recruiting goes. Coach Price is real down to earth and a cool person. He is a definite positive for Ole Miss."
What will Quenton focus on while on the Ole Miss visit?
"Do I like the staff and the area of their school? If I were to go there, would I be happy there for 4 or 5 years? That's all."
Most of the schools are actually recruiting Quenton to play defensive end on the next level. Last year he played for two different schools and amassed 67 tackles and 9 sacks on defense and he caught 27 passes for 428 yards and 5 TD's.
"I have played defense my whole life, so I feel more comfortable there, but I just want to be out on the field. It really does not matter to me. Most of the colleges were recruiting me for tight end until they saw me this spring. They changed their mind after that and started liking me at defensive end."
Miami is also one of those that project the 6' 5", 210 pounder at defensive end.
"I talk to Coach (Wesley) McGriff a lot too. He is just always trying to get me down there to check it out. My coach is looking for a cheap air flight for us to take right now. I am going to go down there. I just do not know when yet."
What has Brown learned about Miami up to this point?
"Other than football and academics, I do not know too much. That is why I am going to take my visit so I can learn more about them."
Any new offers recently?
"Michigan State and Illinois are my newest offers."
Quenton actually took in an unofficial visit to Michigan State this month after being offered.
"My mom went to Michigan State so we were going over there anyway. And then they just happened to offer me about a week before we planned to go up there. She was all excited, so me and my mom and grandmother went up there for the weekend to check it out. I got to see their new facilities, like their field house. I also go to talk to an academic advisor, the head coach and the coach who is recruiting me. I also spoke with their strength coach, and then we went on a tour to see the campus. It was pretty nice. Their new facilities are great. They are all nice. Other than that, it was pretty good. I liked it."
Central Florida also received an unofficial visit from Brown this summer.
"I really like Coach O' Leary, their head coach. He keeps things straight up with you. I really like their facilities too. I also like the area. It is right in the heart of Orlando. Their coaches are real cool too. They also have two of my former teammates playing there, and they graduate over 90% of their football players in three years. The apartments and dorms that the athletes stay in are all right next to each other so it keeps everybody together. UCF is just a real nice school."
Is there a timeframe on a decision?
"We talked about it the other day. My coach said if it is on the front of my mind before the season starts, just go ahead and make my announcement. But if I have any doubts, I am going to wait until after my season. Right now, I am just going to visit Ole Miss and Miami so I will have seen all of my top schools before the end of the summer."
