Will Lucas is a standout linebacker prospect from Lakeland High and Scout caught up with him…
Scout's Take: Purdue LB commitment
Lakeland's William Lucas committed to Purdue last week. What to Like: There's a lot to like about Lucas and it starts with his ability to make plays. Despite playing on the outside, Lucas was the most productive tackler on a very talented Lakeland defense last season. He has good football instincts that enable him to react quickly and he chases down plays extremely well that gives him a chance to make a lot of extra tackles, especially backside or down the field. If you run away from him, you can be sure that he'll be chasing after the play the entire time. He'll also light you up pretty good. It's not uncommon to see him knocking blockers straight backwards or knocking ball-carriers into next week. He's very active in the backfield as well, getting around 25 tackles behind the line last season. In addition to the physical tools, he brings a lot of quality intangibles to the table. He's a smart kid with a strong work ethic and comes from one of the state's premier programs so he's used to winning and competing. What may concern you: He's barely 6-feet and that may have limited his chances at getting even more scholarships. If he were a few inches taller, his upside would be that much better. Because he's asked to play upfield so much, he's rarely seen in coverage down the field. That's not to say he can't do it but you just don't see him doing it much at this level so that'll be somewhat of a transition for him at the next level. While he has good enough speed (combined with excellent instincts) to be a very productive player at this level, his lack of elite speed for an OLB prospect is another reason why some of the top tier programs probably didn't try recruiting him harder. Bottom Line: He was arguably the best player on a very good Lakeland defense last season. He's a hard-working kid with good character and he'll make a lot of plays for you because he has good instincts and he hustles around really well. He might lack ideal size and speed but he's clearly a candidate to be a top 100 player in Florida this year. It's an excellent pickup for a Big 10 program like Purdue.
