The Newest Baylor Commit
One thing you find from being a sports writer for a dozen years is that the motives for a recruit commit follow in a handfull of categories. One of the biggest things that affects where a recruit goes is the home state, but that is not as big a factor in Texas as it is in other states. In Texas you have a large population of people who have moved in from other states, thus their loyalty to the home state schools is not that great. Still, a lot of players want to stay relatively close to home, play for a program that will win and education plays a big part. There are other main categories such as playing time but that comes into effect at some positions more than others. For Luke Burleson his decision to commit to Baylor had many facets but the main reasons may sound familiar to you. "It is in Texas, I wanted a school not too big, the program is on the rise and there was a lot of little stuff that made me decide on Baylor" said Luke Burleson. Having a dynamic coach with a good personality always helps and someone who has a reputation as a brillant coaching mind plays in. After all if you don't believe in the head coach you don't believe in the program. Art Briles has long had a reputation as being one of the top offensive minds in Texas, going back to his Stephenville days. When Burleson decided to commit he talked to the coach recruiting him then gave his official commit to Coach Briles. "I talked to Coach Briles and told him I want to be a Baylor Bear, he said 'all right I knew you were smart'." The offensive tackle from Allen had been racking up the offers in the summer and the question we asked him was, "when did you know that Baylor was the place for you". "I really thought it was the place for me when I went there for the unofficial visit and met all the coaches." Baylor recruited Burleson as a tackle and he joins Tim Smith from Baytown Lee, Troy Baker from Waco Connally and Xavier Ruben from Baytown Lee as offensive line commits though Ruben plays defensive tackle also. The final decision was between Baylor and two other schools before the Bears finally won out. "The main schools I was having trouble deciding was Oklahoma State and Kansas."
