Apple Valley's John Shevlin talks about his verbal commitment. He'll stay home and play for the Golden Gophers.

“I gave Minnesota my verbal commitment,” said athlete John Shevlin.

“The reason I picked Minnesota was because it’s close to home and the program is on the rise in my opinion.

“Another big reason for my commitment was (Minnesota) defensive coordinator Greg Hutchins. I felt comfortable with him and that meant a lot in the end.”

Shevlin, a 6-foot-1, 200-pounder, from Apple Valley (Minn.) Eastview is a three-year varsity starter that was named all-state in 2002.

Shevlin chose Minnesota over Northwestern, Nebraska and San Jose State
